Default Gearbox Failure Photos

Hi

Just been to the garage, so iv took some pictures of the gearbox. The garage said that the swarf/metal filings are attached to the magnet at the bottom of the gearbox which is wrong and that is sounds like the bearings have gone.

A full bearing rebuild is £1200 plus VAT and a replacement box is £1900 plus VAT

I said just flush the gearbox out completely and il see if the whinings reduced first before i commit to anything. like i said every gear is fine and the no vibration at speed, just the whining..

They said that if they put new oil in the gearbox it would just pop.

The oil was black with very minute metals in bits mostly on the magnet and had bubbles in it...

Whats the best gearbox oil for this gearbox??

Do these gearboxes whine as standard??? whats the dccd??

What your expect opinions????

I think you should bite the bullet and get a new/replacement box

Hi John. I would get it rebuilt.

1. It's cheaper
2. With a secondhand box if your unlucky you could have the same problem.
3. With a rebuild you will have a warranty should anything happen to it.
4. Peace of mind you have all new bearings in your rebuilt box.

That's what I would do.

Andy.

I will but I want to see if there's any difference once the oils changed regarding the whining. Yeh a full rebuild would b best if that's the case

Cheers all

It wont go pop just like that, easy enough to diagnose if its the transfer case at the rear of the box were the bearings are failing

Is it a local garage? Have you got any other opinions?

Won't all the labour costs sticking the gearbox in and out of the car be better spent on proper diagnosis and rebuild ?

Yeh, the gearbox hasn't been out, the garages assumption is that the box has gone due to the whining noise due to the bearings and swarf collected on the magnet....

You are right the gearbox will be taken out once by the garage who will rebuild it, just hope its better once the oils been replaced.

Re: second hand box, I was lucky with a classic last year when I picked up a TY754VN1AA for £100 and it was perfect.... So yo CAN be lucky.

Depends if worth the risk.

A rebuild gives piece of mind if done properly.

For the cost clean off the magnets, refill the oil take it for a gentle drive. Drain the oil remove the gearbox sump look at the magnet (picture 7) clean off refill and go from there. If when looking at the magnets there is still a lot of swarf then go for a rebuild, if there is none or very little hopefully it's just from the gearbox bedding in.

sorry mate.
ive seen a lot worse than that.
oil colour is realy bad though.
Id use 90 grade like the rob says.
i would carefully clean all the covers (keep the metal bits of swarf in a bag)to show rebuilder if this is later required.
I would then refil with clean oil and do 100 gentle miles, then drain it and check for further swarf. depending on what you get , then decide.
sounds good to have a gearbox 'pop' but they don't often , its whining like a pig on heat first, compare your damage to the diagram you were sent prevoiusly.
Good Luck.

Just looked again and it isn't ripped off teeth it is froth from the oil. I really must get my eyes tested.

Let me get this right, the pictures at the top are of the gearbox in question ? The one with all the teeth ripped off? Why is there talk about changing the oil to see if the whining stops? or am I missing the point here?

I have BRAND new 6 speed uk boxes in stock, non dccd type but easily convertible to dccd type if necessary.

A new box takes all the guesswork out of how good any used replacement might be. I have never seen a 6 speeder with broken teeth and we have some running in the 600 hp and above range WITH launch control, never broken one yet.

You must be very unlucky.

Not so much time, they are F**kin' heavy we charge £300.00 + VAT it's about a 3 .5 - 4 hours job in and out [ properly ! - fitting ALL the bolts ] using at least 3 people for the in and out lifting job.
