there are lots of bodyshops in plymouth that would take on the arches no probs.re-shelling would be horrendously expensive and most places would say no or price so high you wont take it there.try spectrum bodyshop in saltash for the arches as good lads and prices and done the bodywork on my last 3 cars.i can understand why your mate wont use our local specialist as local people know of lots of bad things for a lot of years happening there.the son is spot on though and very good at his job.shame grumpy dad spoils the place...

ok,thanks for the replies lads.
i will pass the info about spectrum to him
@marcevs,i know exactly where you mean,he wont go there as he watched them blow up a s13 on the r/r after saying, theres more in it..wel turn the boost up,it went pop and they said, dont worry we can rebuild it for 3k..
and he wont go to ap motors as he left his car there to have work done, walked around on his lunch break at midnight and they were driving the customers cars around, had his car 2 days,no work done but when he got it back the clutch was fooked.
neither of us trust any garage really lol

when ap opened they had a rolling road day and i watched in amazement when they didnt strap any cars down and were just nailing it until they hit the limiters in 4th...then they wondered why i wouldnt put my audi s2 on there.have seen a cossie jump off the rollers as well and almost took the rear wall out.shame someone hasnt got the backing to open up another jap specialist garage in devon/cornwall as 1 has the monopoly down here and can charge and get away with what they want as most people wont travel 100's miles up country

my mate has the same mentalility lol, doesnt really want to travel 100s of miles up the line, but then doesnt wanna get done over either.
your right, we really need a good, reliable and trusted tuner down here, only one ive heard great things about is sumikaya but the specialise in gtos/3000gt.

thats a load of old tosh mate, the guys at enginetuner bend over backwards to help. What i have always found tho is when ever an individual slags of any tuner there is always two sides of the story !

They also spotted some metal in the rear diff, smallish bits but there all the same. When I asked Alan how much to replace, he advised me to do it myself with a secondhand diff to save the labour: another chance to make cash from me gone.
All in all, a nice guy, and I couldn't recommend them enough.

well maybe ishould post up how they made me wait for my car when they broke an intercooler pipe saying they were replacing it and then the next day it blows apart because they superglued it...then had the nerve to say i had to pay for replacing it....then there are the ****ty pm's on here from alan giving me greif and saying tough you have an old car...as you say 2 sides.plus i am one of dozens of people that have had grief with alan well before he started being a subaru specialist.i am 40 years old and spent all my life in plymouth and watched his business go from one place to another.oh and i see you have a 2.1 lump from them ,of course they will bend over backwards for you as your spending 1000's with them.
it shouldnt mateer whether your spending £10 or 10K you should be treated the same.
this is my opinion and have stated before martyn and the lads are brilliant and do a top job but alan is a grumpy old man that treated me like crap after bodging my car so i feel i have the right to my opinion.if people have been treated differently then thats great for them....end of.

for your information i chose to have a engine build there due to the service i received prior ! Hows this for service (before i had my 2.1!) I had a problem with my simtek, so i send Martyn a message on a sunday afternoon, he tells me to ring him, which i do. We then spent some time trying things and getting to the bottom of the problem (all done while he's trying to put his shopping away!) So after a good hour of phone calls it turns out i wired a switch incorrectly! Bad service..........obviously !

Never had any problems from either Alan or Martyn or anyone from Engintuner, wether I spend thousands or less.
Always on the end of a phone to help.
You must be one of the few with bad experiences.

i cant believe what im hearing as regard to alan and the other lads as it been a first class service and back up for me,with everything, even if i just want some advice, they are always glad to help.ive had a few people do jobs on my car,inc engine building, mapping, repairs etc etc......
the service you get from alan and staff is second to none regardless to how much you are spending.i wont be using anyone else......ever!

although ive never had a problem at enginetuner and think the guys down there are stars i did have a bad run in with ap motors a few years ago and tbh i wouldnt go there ever again not even to have the wrongs put rite but when it comes to enginetuner i cant praise them enough.ive not had any major work done there but the last time my car was on the rollers it boost spiked and insted of pushing it and getting me a better bhp graph they just stoped the run and told me how to get it sorted.with that info in had ive now bought a simtec that will be mapped down there.as for alan being a grump i think thats just him, were not all happy smilely people all the time and i do find that alans grumpiness in the total impreza mag never fails to make me laugh

Personally I've spent serious cash there and no problems at all.
If all companies were as reliable as Enginetuner then Trading Standards would not exist.
Sounds like the OP needs a bodyshop, not a tuning workshop.

The man booked in for a clutch change. The car was an early Impreza with the slanty intercooler and stock dump valve.
When the plastic pipe was removed from the valve, the feed in pipe from the intake broke. It's plastic, and had been on the car for some time. They get very brittle.
Our brief was to return the car that day.
We searched the building looking for another intake pipe. No joy. I rang the only person likely to have one locally, no joy. We used Superglue to hold the pipe together. No other choice in the circumstances.
When the man picked his car up he was informed about the problem, and told to get in touch if he had an issue with it.
It subsequently failed. I don't know about you, but I find Superglue to be anything but.
So there we are in the office, in comes the man. He's huffing, and clearly spoiling for an argument, I can detect that one a mile off. He's already worked himself up before he got there.
He told me that the pipe had failed, in his own style, finishing with "AND WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?"
I'm now thoroughly on the defensive, no surprise when you're approached like that in an office busy with customers.
I therefore said "I don't know, let me see, er, fit a new one? and I suppose you'd like me to pay for it?"
As he was already wound up, that didn't go down well.
I arranged to get one, and call him when it was in.
On the appointed day, he arrived, face like thunder. We fitted the pipe, free of charge, he left, face like thunder. No mention of the clutch, which was the purpose of the original visit. I assume that was fine.
Here's an alternative.
He comes in, having been informed about the problem, and tells me it's failed.
Irritating I know, but he accepts that these things happen sometimes.
I offer to replace the pipe at my own expense.
We smile, and arrange a repair. No bother at all.
There's an old expression. You get more bees with honey. Which strangely enough is the theme of my latest "Total Impreza" missive..
