Unfortunately after a slight prang I have had to replace both nearside wheels and tyres. This would mean leaving part worns on one side of the car which is obviously not acceptable. Should I put the new tyres on the front or back? I'm going with the front at the moment but would appreciate expert advice.I know there is a forum for tyres but need advice quick.

I think that the recommendation is to put them on the front and new ones the 'rear.

I would do it the other way round -- the fronts wear faster than the rears.

I think that your best tyres should be on the back as this give the best stability especially under braking. Not only are some tyres directional butsome tyres have inside and outside markings.

Go careful rotating tyres, I did it once on the scoob, front/rear and it screwed the handling up for 1000-1500 miles until they bedded in on that wheel/axle/side few scary moments

Cool

The subject of rotating tyres front to back came up at Powerstation, I was advised not to as fronts wear differently to rears due to differing angles of goemetry ie castor/camber toe in etc. At this point I got confused so asked for the simplified version to which I got "It'll handle like sh1te"

Now theres a technical explanation for you thanks for that Richard!

BTW I got a similar description for my pre bumpsteer settings, which I understood perfectly ....

The essence of putting new tyres on the back is not for wearing purposes (doh!).....
Its related to lift off oversteer problems and helping reduce the chance of the rear breaking away .......ie put the grippier tyres on the rear.

Driven or Top Gear did a test a couple of months ago, and the recommendation was to have the new tyres on the rear. This proved to be the safer option. I tend to swap my tyres around front to back every 5000 miles, to even out the wear. Its always best to replace all 4 tyres at the same time with a 4 wheel drive car, so by rotating they are all ready for swapping at the same time.
