Hi guys,
I'm looking at getting a MY55 impreza STi. I've been looking around and come across one at a reasonable price.
Thing is I rang the dealer today with a view to going to see it tomorrow, after talking with the guy I asked about service history. he says its been lost. Apparently all other documents are there just not the history. the car is HPI clear.
Just wondered if its worth taking a look with the potential of buying it or just forget about this one and keep looking?
What do you guys think?
thanks

I would look at the rest of the documentation for the car, particularly the v5, this will have the previous owner details on it, look them up and give them a ring.
You could do that before handing over any cash, you would then get a better idea from the owner rather than a dealer.
They may even have the stamped book

it's just my opinion but i'd be more suspicious of a car with a full dealer history. how many people do you know who go back to subaru for work? stamps are easy to make or pay for.

Thanks Steve, thats a good idea i didn't think of that. I'll make sure i get a look at everything he has and get the details.
Shane, its just me but I thought the history would be quite important but I see your point. My integra type R has a full Honda History

I don't know yet, I'll have a good look the docs he has tomorrow.
I tend to keep all the receipts for any work I've had done so hopefully there'll be some. Do you think the proof of any work being done is important?
Whats the minimum?

My car is an import and although the jap service book is present I don't understand it, it just has a bunch of receipts from prosport for work carried out since coming in the country and I have just kept this up by keeping all receipts for everything I have had done, I do the oil changes myself and have kept receipts in a folder with a small checklist of what I have done and recorded mileage and date work carried out. Hopefully this would give confidence to a prospective buyer if I sold it, but at the end of the day a lot of cars out of warranty are serviced DIY or at other garages. In fact when I sold my wrx after doing similar I didnt have any issues when the new owner looked the car over. But no receipts at all is a bit hit and miss, as long as it checks out and it is priced correctly just get a full service including belt change and then carry on from there.

as said above get hold of the old owner and ask him, or if there is any paperwork with any dealers name on it give them a ring and ask its history.
that is what i done when i got mine the dealer then sent me a full copy of all work they had done on the car.
