bugeye sti cambelt change
Hi, ive recently bought myself an 02 jdm bugeye sti with only 26k and 1 owner ! The history shows that the cam belt was changed at 14k in 2007, assuming due to age of belt, not mileage. How many years is a cambelt good for before it will need changing ? if it's 5, then it's due again ! Any info on this would be good ! cheers !

technically even though it hasnt covered a vast amount of miles it is due down to the time since the last one being fitted the 5 yrs is up. for the price of a belt and fitting it's a small price to pay for peace of mind.

How long is a piece of string? There is no "right" time to replace a cambelt - even Subaru are confused. I have an Impreza WRX 2005 - now 7 yrs old with 46k on the clock (was sourced from Malta). I'll be getting the belt done in the next couple of months for the first time.
Subaru UK say 60 months or 50-60k miles whichever comes first.
Subaru Malta say 84 months or 66k miles whichever comes first.
Subaru North America say 105 months or 105k miles whichever comes first.
Contacted Subaru Malta and they confirmed that 84 months or 66k miles should be fine.
Subaru Europe said that the importers can set their own replacement intervals and attempted to justify Subaru UK 5yr or 50/60k interval by saying that their was a record of WRX being driven very hard in the UK.....but that doesn't explain why Subaru UK also specify the same replacement mileage / time period to all cars in their line up.
Maybe just a ploy by Sub UK to help the the dealers make a bit more money?
If you can be certain that the belt was done in 2007, i'd be leaving it for another 2 years before replacing. Would be worthwhile removing the belt cover and checking condition.
IMO if you listened to all the grannys on this site you'd be scared to take your car above 4000 revs - for peace of mind!!
