Mobile Phone Fraud. URGENT!!!
#1
All.
Just received this from a contact at Cellnet.
Message received from BT this morning
Please note the attached sent to us from one of our customers this
morning. if you get a phone call on your mobile from an Eircell or a
Digifone engineer, telling you that they are doing a check on your phone
and that you should press #90 or 09# END THE CALL IMMEDIATELY!!
There is a fraud company on the go who have devised a device that once
you have pressed #90 or 09#, they can access your SIM CARD and make calls
from it at your expense. Tell as many people as you know that have mobile
phones who dont read this BBS.
If this has happened to you today by chance, call BT Cellnet straight away and inform them.
Regards
Ronnie

Mark,
Was there actually anybody from Vodafone, Orange, Cellnet or One2One on the program who actually confirmed this is happening?
It would be most unlike a radio station to give out false information wouldn't it (Remember the 2nd fuel crisis panic when a radio station reported (incorrectly) on more fuel protests)

The above codes (mainly 09#) will display the SIM codes for most modern mobile phones. Just typing the code will not transmit any information, but it will display it on your screen.
A useful code to try is *#06#. This gives the serial number of your phone. If anyone steals your phone, you can give this number to you mobile provider and they can block/bar it from use.
Never give any personal deatials to anyone that calls you - especially credit card or bank details. If in doubt, always ask for a number to call them back on and confirm with whatever company they say they work for who they are.

This is a (n old) <B>hoax</B>, and sadly doesn't say a lot for the quality of staff at the BT call centre!

It makes you think why they dont use the equipment register with the phones (all mobiles can be "attached" to their sim cards by the use of a register at the exchange) this would vertually eliminate fraud as the only people who could then ammend this would be the operators (working on BT cellnet site just now)
