More information wold be helpful mate like WRX or STI route, bugget, mods or not etc.
If your not a car enthusiast then I suggest to get someone who is so that they can throw valuable advice your way & advise you in the purchase a Scoob
If a car has been modded you need to be aware because it depends who has done the mods (DIYer, Enthusiast, Professional) so it is worthwhile asking someone who knows Subaru's too accompany you. Also any mods to the car need to be highlighted with the insurance company. Mods are classed as anything that is not standard factory fitted so this could bump your insurance up so be aware of some potential pitfalls.
Take your time mate, don't rush in as purchasing the wrong car can be expensive as with any car I might add.
Make a list of what you want with the car & stick to it because it is too easy to compromise if you are impatient & then you may regret it at a later date. Also try & purchase one that is more local because you don't want to be travelling 200 miles if you have issues as some ppl have experienced.

Happy hunting mate!

Probably also worth considering that now is the time to be buying certain model classics as a possible investment! Its certainly a nice feeling to own a car for a few years, then sell it for more than it cost you! :-)

Certain RA's .... the P1 ..... RB5 .... etc.

Just my £0.02!

My initial thoughts were a more or less standard car which I am told produce around 220bhp possibly a blue51 to 54 reg style car with the works graphics

WRX or STi I dont know ?? ant advice from the scooby experts will be appreciated

Also I like the cars with the bigger air scoop ( are they only on a particular model )

As I say all advice taken on board
thanks

You still need to say your budget 5.5k can get you a wrx 7.5k would be an sti on the same plate as an example.

STI has more power stronger engine 6 speed gearbox etc etc. The big airscoop is on the MY03 aka Blobeye from 52 - 06 plate.52 and 06 are rarer more common from 03 - 05.

STI would be the car to go for if you have the funds.

Only classic that will be a collectors is a 22b, RB5's are not worth a carrot and anyone who's spends over 7 grand on a P1 must want there head feeling. Classic Subaru's will never command the prices of say escort cossies, Skyline R32 gtrs and the like...

its a buyers market mate, you can pick up a Blob sti for about that no problem. I've seen quite a few for the 5.5 - 6k mark, some one owner's too with fsh.

Only time will tell on thatun fella, but id put money on decent examples of limited edition classics being worth a pretty penny in 10 years or so .... ok, your right, not in the same league and exclusivity as escy cossies etc .... but if you could go back to 1988, there were plenty of people saying exactly what you just have about rs200's, chevette HS's and lotus sunbeams.

"possibly a blue51 to 54 reg style car with the works graphics"

ah .... right then .... works graphics hey ...... put buy £500 for stickers then!

Thats me out.

Dont get me wrong, I like RB5's and P1's but wouldn't pay over the odds for one. Who know's, maybe a minter with 1000 miles on it will pop up in ten years time and prove me wrong...

mint classics will be unheard of in 10 years, so any decent ones will be worth a lots of money, and id say the same with Bug eyes!

Whichever one you're going to look at, beware rust underneath. The plastic undertrays can hide some serious corrosion, especially on the 2000 - 2002 (Bug Eye) cars. Look very hard.
