Uprated Gearbox Question,Insight Needed please chaps.
Hey Guys n Gals,
ok
have asked many people opinions on here about what gearkit they are using and how they are to use on a day to day basis.
in a classic and still running 5 speed
now, i would like to look at it on the technical side a bit more.
i have been looking at the albins, cant find too much info on it to be honest but i know it is a proven unit and is strong by whats been said on here.
iirc they retain the standard final drive? and are in effect a strenghtend o.e.m spec unit?
and are these helical?
have also been looking at
the quaife 5 speed synchromesh kit with grp N ratios and original final drive,
and they are quoted as semi-helical?
both the gearkits are about the same price.
now i have looked at loads of group n rally vids on the net and they do fly through the gears and seem to have a really long 5th.
i dont do alot of motorway miles at all so dont need to cruise along at low revs for 1000s of miles a month so i would like to have an acceleration gearbox over a top end gearbox if you know what i mean .
seeing as both the gearkits use the same standard final drive,am i right in assuming that they will both "top out" at the same mph?
if so i may be more interested in the group n,faster acceleration ratios.
however,
from what i gather, group n impreza were pushing out 250-300bhp?
so if i were to run 450-500bhp would this be to much strain for the quaife,as its quoted as semi helical and there is no claimed power output on the site for this box?
although i have heard many times quaife massively under value the power the gearboxes can take to cover their own back.
would i be better going with standard ratios and strenghtened? (albins) proven to 500++ bhp
or unknown but well proven rally specialists Quaife and run the risk of if it will break?
have considered an ra box but 120-130 is a bit low.
what do you guys think?

Your looking at 4k for any kind of uprated box and most are only rated to around the 500 bhp mark, and use a standard 5th.
Scoobyclinics gear set is quite new and supposedly good, but not heard of too many that are running it at big power and giving it what for on a regular basis so best to speak to adam @ the clinic.
The proven route is 6 speed and there are various boxes to choose from, if you like the short ratio's then jdm 6 speed is the way to go, but these days those doing big power builds are going for the hawk 6 speed with longer ratio's, the main reason for this i assume is that you don't half get through the gears quickly when you have big power.
I personally prefer the short ratio's on a classic and think they suit them the best and are lots of fun in a type r, they are supposed to have a final ratio that tops out at 157mph but that would be red line in 5th @ circa 8250 rpm, i never got anywhere near that, although i did see an indicated 150mph at donnington which turned out to be 126mph
Jura is the man to speak to as he is running some sort of aftermarket gearset and will have done his research, he is also very knowledgeable on all things subaru.

I have a short ratio JDM 6 speed on my 2.5 and to be honest I could do with the longer ratios as 1st and second are next to useless with the torque I have!
Uk 6 speed would be my choice, hawk if possible on 2.5, blob/bug on a 2.0.

Interesting topic and one I am in a similar situation looking for a gearbox except I am looking at the top speed end for a gearbox. Regarding the Albins Kit I believe and I could be wrong but isn't kev at the clinic using the albins gear set in his 576bhp roughly 22b ? Sounds pretty reliable to me and his has a top end of roughly 165mph... Maybe he has a modified 5th to allow it to stretch that far ?

dont fancy a siz speed really would prefer to retain a 5 speed.
sounds like to be fair the albins could be better as i know its being used above the power im using and its pretty o.e.m you can have the uprated 5th,so id be getting that too.
at least its proven tested, where as i would love the quaife with the group n ratios, but i would be worrying all the time it may break.
iirc, jura is running a PPG straight cut 1-4.

I believe that up to a hawk 1 to 4 gears are the same in a JDM and UK its only 5th and 6th that are different ie JDM sorter.
