check engine light
I have a 2003 wrx, I have fitted a de cat exhaust system and all has been good. I have recently put on a new de cat turbo up pipe and since that I have had a check engine light come on.
On the new pipe there is no place for the heat sensor, I spoke to the manufacturer and they said it did not matter just cable tie it out of the way it is not needed, is this true?
I have had a garage check the light and it says "heat sensor malfunction (high input)" how can I rectify this problem?? Is this going to damage the vehicle I have been told I can carry on driving it??

There was a thread on here just a few weeks ago.
A young lad was driving around in a newage STI with fully de-catted exhaust system, his CEL was also on.
Decided he'd push the car hard and guess what, good bye engine.
The company who told you to ignore the CEL are a joke, what do you think the light is there for ?

So you have removed all cats? - Definitely will need a remap.
The up-pipe will cause a CEL because you have removed the probe from the up-pipe, if you have only removed this cat and / or the mid pipe cat you (still running the downpipe) you can safely run this without a remap. However i am assuming you have also removed the DP then you will definitely need a remap.
Removing the probe itself wont cause any issues.

Would be a good idea. Why dont you refit the up-pipe until you can afford a remap(not suggesting you are skint), then refit the decat up-pipe on the day of the map. Problem solved.

You have removed the pre-cat and the EGT sensor which normally inhabit the OEM Pipe........the CEL is for the missing EGT sensor.
The WRX TD04 will spool a bit better but the ECU will compensate for the better airflow without breaking a sweat as the TD04 is so small........no gain in power.
Most people don't bother with a replacement up-pipe for the TD04 as replacing doesn't do much unless you are wringing the last ounce you can out of the TD04 and then there's the possibility of the extra heat damaging the cat and goodbye turbo.
Since you have done it now then I'd get someone like Racedynamix if he is passing to turn off the CEL, if not search on here for a CEL resistor fix to turn off the light.
Have you had the car mapped already ??

If the gain I am getting is so small I might just put the old one back on.

Your WRX has a very capable DENSO ECU and is easilly mapped.
Personally I'd get it mapped via a reputable mapper, someone has already mentioned Duncan Graham (Racedynamix) but there are others. This will actually improve pootling around MPG as the ECU runs the engine rich from the factory and also improve power and torque no end.
The WRX came pretty de-tuned from the factory so as not to get anywhere near the STi's performance.

It depends on which software is used.......EcuTeK software requires a licence and usually pans out at about£500- £600 , Opensource software has no licence and is less.
Often a travelling mapper will do a "group" meaning prices can go a lot lower, maybe down to below £300 for opensource mapping........
Like everything, it's a matter of shopping around.
For a re-mapped WRX you won't be dissapointed

Get the car mapped, it really is that simple.
It's not that expensive on a newage and alot cheaper than an engine rebuild.
It's your car chap so really is up to you, but masking the problem really isn't the right solution.
