Default Handling and suspension?

Evening all just after some advice. I'm looking at sorting the handling/suspension out on my car but have no idea where to start I.e what's needed, what should I do/buy first, what products to buy etc? So I'm looking at all the advice I can get please as per above, what's first to buy/fit then what to do after that. Thanks in advance

How far you want to go with budget?
Do you want coilovers etc or normal shocks and what's your intended use.
Drop links is also an option, arb, alk etc... Depends on how you want it to drive and uses of vehicle.

First thing would be to sort out alignment, which is originally setup for massive under-steer. Cost c. £130
Second would be coil-over / lowering / anti-lift kit route. Cost £1K plus.
But if doing both, do the second first and then alignment.
Just my opinion from personal experience.

Both the above are wrong.

The FIRST thing you need to do is tell us what car, make, model and year.
THEN you need to tell us what you intend to use it for: commuting, fast road, sprints, track, etc.

Personally I think some guys totally ruin the awsome handling of these cars with some coilovers.but each to their own. Still a little lowering no more than 40mm and anti roll bars should improve things.although it's true uk scoobs have loads of understeer.

That's right.
I am automatically assuming he wants to get his STI on the track.

Understeer can be largely dialled out with geometry settings, or a larger dia rear arb, which is a great initial upgrade path to improved handling. Then see what you've got and what you would like to change/improve

Where do I start?

First off, the Scoob out of the box doesn't HAVE "awesome handling", it understeers like a pig. It GRIPS well enough, but doesn't handle.

Secondly, "lowering": Noooooooooooooooo!

You fek up the car's roll centre if you go any more than 25mm, and even at 25 mm you might need to start altering all sorts of suspension settings to put the roll centre back where it was.

Well what you could do is get a set of STI suspension and a whiteline rear ARB. To be honest the brakes are rubbish on the Turbo 2000 too.

As above: brakes first unless they are done. A set of Subaru 4-pots goes a long way to helping, but needs the 99-00 16" wheels as a minimum.

Then replace the REAR arb with one size thicker, iirc it goes up to 22mm from 20mm. Mine is a Whiteline adjustable, it runs on medium setting. Put solid droplinks all round, but leave the FRONT arb alone or you put the understeer back

Then take it to somewhere like Powerstation, or Carnetix and have a full 4-wheel geometry done by someone who knows what he is doing, NOT your local tyre centre or garage!

You could also have an anti-lift kit fitted and mine also runs the bump-steer mod.

That's it, really, nothing else needed, it will transform the car's HANDLING for around £250, and, unless the struts are tired, you don't need to spend on them.
