P1 vs Evo Extreme

P1
- The WRX STi won Top Gears best 'Drivers' car for 2002, and IMHO the P1 is even better then that - http://www.bbc.co.uk/motoring/topgear/596_1.shtml

To be honest, I'd have to go with the EVO... (thats if you aren't considering an STI 7)
I own an STI 7 myself, but seriously considered the EVO VII, only being put off by the lack of 6 speed gearbox, the tiny fuel tank and the interior. (Oh, and it was more expensive).

The better out and out drivers car is the EVO, you'll find that out if you read back issues, reviews, tests, stats e.t.c e.t.c....
Whether you can (cue cliche...) 'live with it day to day' as you could a P1 is a different matter....but if you can (cue biased bit) live with respraying bits of your P1 each week when the paint flakes off then thats another matter too.....
*cough* Mitsubishi *cough*

Evo also for me,
The Evo is a much different car I would go with a standard Evo VII over a standard P1 also
My main reasons are because the Evo seems much faster with more torque and they are less common scoobys are 10 a penny

Which Evo Extreme are you talking about, the Evo 6 or the Evo 7?
And why the 'don't be biased' comment? You're on a scooby board!!!!
Post the same question on the Lancer Evo board and I'm sure you'll get similar unbiased responses!!!
Anyway, now that I've got that out of the way my opinion for what it's worth
The P1 is a reasonable comparison to a standard Evo 6 but the suspension is softer and the brakes on the P1 are IMHO, after test driving one, crap. This would make it a better proposition for driving around town but make it worse (as standard) on the A-B road blasts. As a result, it depends on what you want the car for. If it is for everyday driving around with the occasional blast then a P1 will be more comfortable and forgiving than a standard Evo.
To compare a P1 to an Evo 6 Extreme is like comparing apples to pork pies . THey are 2 completely different cars. The Evo 6 Extreme has a lot harder suspension than even the standard Evo and you definitely couldn't live with it on a day-to-day basis. It is really a rally car with rear seats or a very good trackday car.
However, as I always say on these things, test drive both a see what you like. The Evo Extreme will be a brutal full-on experience whereas the P1 will be a lot more refined and subtle.

Standard P1 against a 7 Extreme. I know you would say i am biased, but it really is no contest in the performance stakes. The Extreme is faster and handles better. However, the ride quality is not as good.
Look at the evidence. Quoted figures are 339 bhp verses 276 bhp and 350 lbs/ft verses 260. OK, there is a weight difference but the power to weight ratio of the Extreme is still far better, 242 bhp/tonne against 215. This reflects on the accelaration, both 0-whatever and in gear as well. Take 0-60 - 4.2 secs against 4.9 and 0-100 - 11 against 13.3 (sources Evo and Autocar).
Handling is a subjective thing but put equal driving skills in the cars, the Extreme wins again!.
However, you need to remember that the Extreme costs a minimum of £40,000 new, which is a lot more than the P1. Spend that sort of money on a P1 and it would, no doubt, match my Extreme. However, it would still only be a modified P1 and as we all know, modified cars do not hold the value of the mods while designated models do.
Hope this isn't too biased. Both are great cars and I have upmost respect for the P1.

It took me a while to decide this one myself, but I decided the P1 was the better of the two for a number of reasons, handling on country roads, braking on uneven surfaces and the big one being I could insure the P1 without having to doo a bank job. I think I drove the Evo so many times the dealer has tried to ban me, they are very close head to head, its all down to who is willing to screw their car the most!!
Thats my two pennys worth, most will say being a P1 owner he will say that, and I would if I was reading it..........
Its donw to choice really

Hi Pops here. DOn't listen to these Lancer boys. They have come to hijack our forum!!! Of course they will say the extreme is better!!!! For me anyway Simon, my Sport is the better alrounder of the two. With the agility of the Extreme and the Power(well almost after I have finished modding it) of the P1, it should see you off sunshine, in a one on one duel!!! And how much did your's cost?? Methinks I have the better buy Lancer boyo!!! So enough of you're technical bull, put you're money where you're mouth is- Myself and my mate Rod will meet you on Junction 17 of M1 tomorrow for 1/4 mile sprint. We'll be in the Little Chef(Rod likes the Big7 burger) so meet you there. I'll be wearing the Top Man '****' top and Rod has a George at Asda white Sweatshirt. Cya at 3 p.m!

Don't know if this helps the comparison or not, but I owned an Sti 6 Type R for 2 years, and chucked it in for an Evo 6 Extreme a few months back. 0 to 60 you couldn't split the two, but 0 to 100, or say 30 to 100, much as I loved my Scoob, the Evo would trounce it. Handlings sharper to.

The P1 is a better car if you have the brakes done etc (alcon upgrade) and it is also warrantied by Subaru UK, ok its down on power over the extreme and the evo6's are good cars (abeit the warping brakes that they all seem to suffer from on the 6's!) but it depends what you want really, for an everyday road car the P1 is best suited, for a weekend trackday car the evo extreme is better but IMHO id buy an STI7 and wait til the PPP is out, better brakes on that than any std evo (or ralliart modified one in!) also gets the family in better and much more range out of a tank of fuel (ie you dont have to keep on stopping thus enabling you to have more fun in the process )

Whatever. Don't understand your attitude. I have been posting what I believe is reasonable posts on this forum for some time now. I have never "hijacked" the forum and always given a balanced view, as I believe I have above. I would say that your post is a "hijack" because it doesn't address the question, but just gets into silly schoolboy mode. I have never dissed the Scooby which I hold in high regard to the extent that i recommended that my brother bought one, which he has. It suits his needs far more than an Extreme would. Horses for courses.
As for your little challenge, you miss the whole point. We are talking about a standard P1 against a standard Extreme. There is always somebody who has a bigger and better one, we can just keep playing that game until we reach 600+bhp. But that is not the point of this.
As for your car having the power of a P1 and the agility of the Extreme, that still makes it a lot slower. You ask how much I paid, READ THE POST above and I conceeded that you could spend the difference on your P1.
The original post asked for unbiased views on the P1 against the Extreme. Your view is clearly biased while I tried to point out the good and bad. I have driven both, I doubt from the nature of your reply you have.
This forum is one of the great car forums, but occasionally, when a serious discussion comes along, some people cannot look past their narrow minds.

Until you agree on a definition of the word "better", these topics will always start arguments.
The Evo is faster and can corner faster, but then it's more expensive, so you'd kind of expect it to.
Personally, I prefer the Scooby. Never saw the point in buying a rally car that's set up for ultra-smooth race tracks. If I wanted a track car, I'd buy a real one, like a Lotus or a Porsche. Rally cars are supposed to handle rough surfaces. Ever seen a real rally car set up for gravel/dirt rallies? Soft springs and suspension travel that's measured in feet, not inches.
If you're after a dedicated track car, then buy an Evo, but as my mate Tiff agrees, the Impreza is the better road car.

simon,
popeye is newly famous for being taking the p1ss, I thought that was evident from his post.
They are characterised by him having a mate who can help/supply/beat anything you need.
I also think its funny that the first official evo lurker came across and said you cant get an unbiased opinion as you are asking on scoobynet........ Did no one think it ironic that all the previous posts by the subaru people had been pro evo?
I did!

But Adam,
Don't you see that they were all biased responses.....
Biased in favour of the Evo
Therefore I felt I had to come out and say some good things about the P1 before I thought I'd typed in the wrong web address and got the MLR board instead of Sccobynet.
Cheers

Totally agree with you that the word better is the problem, which is why I tried to concentrate on the aspects of the cars that are different, which is how I think it is best to put it.
I must strongly disagree with you on one thing though. It is a complete myth that an Evo, or Extreme in particular, is no good on anything but smooth tarmac. They are the best B road car i have ever been in. Once up to speed, the stiff suspension really begins to work and bumps, poor road sufaces and potholes are no problem at all. Problem is that at lower speeds the bumps can seem disconcerting and this can discourage people from opening up. If you doubt this at all, go try one or get a ride from somebody. You will still be shocked at just how hard the ride is, but you won't doubt its capability over roads that aren't the smoothest.

Simonevoextreme,
I think you make a good point about the Evos B road ability. In all the tests I have read it has been said that the EVO is disconcerting on B roads due to its harder set up. Autocar in their big test at the end of 00 reckoned the std MY01 WRX was more comfortable and therefore more likelt to be driven quicker over Exmoor than an EVO 6 in the hands of most drivers for this very reason.
Its like my old 206 gti I guess. I used to drive it more slowly because it felt less secure than other cars I was used to.
Despite what people on this BBS might personally reckon we do not all possess the talents of McCrae et al so I guess this point is probably worth emphasising.

All fair points but I was quoting the Evo figures for the P1 while the Extreme figures come from Autocar!
However, you missed an important point. The question was Evo Extreme against the P1, not a standard Evo. That would be a better comparison and a very close call.

Evo 40K worth ever pound
P1 24K worth ever pound
16k difrence well?
Buy a P1 for the road with toe-bar
spend 16K on a Caterham for track days.(with trailer)
could save even more money if you bought an sti and I am told its quicker?
