The web address below, (sorry do not know how to do a link, if someone can do it for me please) will take you to the web page that show photos of the trackday at Castle Coombe last friday. (beware of the popups)

Was having a brilliant day caning the scooby about until a sudden downpour in the afternoon turned quarryc corner into an ice rink. Result was me spinning and slamming into the barrier at 80mph, backwards.

Poo.

The tyre wall absorbed a lot of the impact and the damage doesn't look to bad from the photos until you look underneath. Possible bent chassis. Oh dear. Insurance people will be picking it up today probably but I don't think i will be seeing her for at least 4-6 weeks.

Would recommend trackdays to anyone just becareful in the wet.

Neil.

Question

What happened? Maybe some of us can learn something from this. Were you going too fast or did you lift off and lose the back or something like that?

Unhappy

Ouch,

can't believe how little run-off area there is before the tyres, especially on what look like quite a fast corner/section of track.

Hope it all gets sorted quickly.

That would mend... Mine was worse than that when I bought it... mind you I understand how most people on here wont accept a car thats been damaged.

Thanks DaveRB.

ScoobyK - I hope it is repairable, even though insurance next year will be a b*tch

B5m - I was going a little too fast even tough I had been going round at that speed for a few laps before. I think it was a combination of the rain making the dirty side of the track like oil and over enthusiasam on my behalf.

John S - Yes I wasn;t too pleased either with the layout. Apperantly there used to be a gravel trap there. So why did they remove it??

Apart from the shunt it was a really good day. Not often I get the chance to race against EVO 5,6, and 7's, GTR's and other wicked cars. If you look down the photos you can see a picture of me racing a P1 which I was about 1 second a lap quicker than!!

Ouch !

I was at Castle Combe a few weeks ago in the pouring rain - great fun (my mates in their S2000 & Porsche 996 didn't think so !!)
There is very little run off all round the track & I had a couple of "moments" though wet grip was superb.
I probably didn't go round half as fast as you though - always had that little voice in my mind saying "slow down....its your pride & joy !!)

Good luck

Ro.

Nezz

They removed the gravel trap because people kept going in sideways and rolling. Its quicker to recover the cars if they are on their wheels and as the tyre wall is so big, the resultant damage is normally less than that caused by a roll.

You are in good company, some very famous people have been off here.

I see your point about the gravel trap being removed but the tire wall was only 2 tires thick, surely at that corner it should be well padded out???

Gravel trap PLUS fast sideways = http://www.rb5wr.com/

The lack of run-off is why I never took my car to Coombe. Nice track, when you're running in someone else's car, great in a Formula Ford

Quarry is a real tricky corner to get _right_ but great fun when you do. Hope you get everything sorted. At least you walked away!!

Thumbs down

know how you feel.I went into a tyre wall recently too but if anything,it has highlighted to me that track days are the safest place to drive fast, expensive when it does not go to plan but safe.

here is mine, not as sore as yours though, must try harder
