I am facing the same issue.

I was in my local cycle shop and he said that the only realistic options were towbar mounted (I'm with you, they may suit some people but I'm not getting one) or roof mounted.

I actually came here looking for information about roof bars but once you have those, it's just a matter of buying the gutter and stands to attach to the roof bars. These aren't expensive.

All I need to do now is find some roof bars that will fit. I once bought some at Ikea (of all places) only to find that they didn't fit. I've been looking on eBay but all the listings I've checked so far say they are compatible with my blob but buried in the listing say you need to have side rails, which my car does not.

Have used a set of roof bars on a 2002 STI for the last 10 years without any problems.

They were the proper Subaru ones manufactured by Mont Blanc that attached to the mounting points hidden under the rain gutter. Much better than the ones that clamp around the top of the door frame. Once you've fitted the discrete mounting clips, the roof bars can be fitted / removed in seconds.

Mine are actually for sale on the SIDC website if you're interested as I've just sold the car.

Originally I found with mountain bikes it was more difficult to find a cycle carrier that clamped the frame properly since most bikes now have oversized or strangely shaped down tubes to clamp to. In the end I bought the Mont Blanc Barracada which has huge adjustable jaws to clamp the frame. The newer Mont Blanc Discovery is similar but lighter & more expensive.

Cheers, Mark

I've offen wondered if the Saris Bones Rack would fit, even with the big STI spoiler?, pics I've seen seem to show the Saris able to fold flat enough to go through the spoiler.......whether it does for real I'm not sure?

Perhaps it will and perhaps it won't but the chap I spoke to in my local cycle shop thought that the wing would make a non-towbar mounted rear carrier a non-starter. In the light of what he said (and he has run that shop for about 30 years and probably knows what he is talking about) I wouldn't buy one without trying it first.

I've decided to go the roof mount route.

I have a Saris Bones Rack and I`ve never tried it but I doubt it would fit tbh.

Fitted this at the weekend, Thule with their new Wing bars, got to say really nice bit of kit, well made and a good fit, loads of accessories available inc bike mounts from £52.

Cheapest place I could find was http://uk.varerum.dk/
