Anyone have any ideas on this,
So I was on a duel carriage way doing 50, dropped it down a gear to 4th to over take a van and as it boosted to 0 it all of a sundden cut the boost. So I lifted off and coasted past the van, then tried the throttle again and saw white smoke starting to come out the back at which point I pulled over and as I did the engine cut out. The AA man thinks it sounds like timing out when I tried turning it over. The was a heavy smell of fuel from the back and under the hood. The car timing belt was last done at 44k and it's now 81k miles. Any ideas?
Car is an 04 wrx running 346bhp with the usual STI bits.
Now waiting for a truck to take me to Scooby clinic

No doesn't even start now, turns over but both the aa chap and the mechanic at the garage said it sounds odd like its down on compression or the timing is out....should know the worst in a couple of days. I'm gutted as I've just had it back after my un-planned excursion at the Ring. Can see why scoobys really test you at times now..

Exact same happened to me last year on my way to work... Thought I`d blown the Turbo... Boost cut, engine died, smoke and coasted to a stop....
Had to leave the car in a nice mans driveway till I`d finished work....
I spent all day moody and gutted about the money I now faced paying out.
Turned out to be just a wee bit of hose on my Hard Pipe for the Front Mount. It had gone soft, split and blown off the hard pipe altogether.
New hose and 2 jubilee clips.... £20 no problems
It`s worth giving the FMiC or TMiC hoses a wee squeeze to see if soft or split

Maybe difficult to tell at the time. Was there white smoke exiting from the exhaust pipe or clouds of the stuff from under the engine/bonnet area less specifically?
Out the exhaust pipe suggests coolant from the engine and that almost certainly means cylinder head gasket damage. Provided no other more widespread damage, engine should still run though even if only roughly.
About twenty years ago, matching strides with a Porsche in my Montego Turbo with engine at near max revs, clouds of white steam bursting from under the bonnet everywhere ~ still able to drive it ~ carefully and filled up with water at nearby house. Then limped home.
Later soon after lifting the bonnet, there's a small hose about four inches long which had split sending coolant onto the hot turbocharger ~ instant clouds of steam. Hoses like so many other things, do not last forever.
Hope it's also something similar but, failing to start again must be a concern.
Be interested to know what is found when diagnosis in.

There was no smoke or steam from the engine bay just the white looking smoke from the exhaust. It's with the safe hands of Scooby clinic now so I'll post up what the out come is in the next couple of days.
Thanks for all the comments, fingers crossed for the easy fix!

Bah, nearly the same thing happend me just yesterday !
Started the car, drove off the front yard, stick it into second gear, revs at 2500 rpm or so, the engine just cuts out and i coast to a stop, with a heavy smell of fuel inside the cabin, try to start it and it wont start, thought my fuel pump has died..
Checked the fuel pump and it is priming fine, disconnected the fuel line and put it inside the bottle and the fuel supply is fine.
Try to start the car again, after 5 seconds cranking it comes alive but barely, very low revs and is shuddering, then comes the smoke from under the bonnet. After further inspection, it's smoking from an uppipe, just under the turbo, seems like there is a small crank in my uppipe there and it causes the smoke to show up...
After making sure it's not going to catch fire i start it again, car judders like a ****, run to look at the exhaust and yep, the biggest cloud of white smoke my car has ever seen!
So i shut it off and book a time with my local garage.
Headgasket ?
Although the car wasnt overheating, havent used any water and there is no white sludge on the dipstick..

Ok, so my problem turned out to be nothing dramatic.
One of the idle control pipes got torn one one side so it's lost its strength and got squished, which simply blocked off any air getting into the engine at idle for some time.
This meant that the engine got flooded and when the pipe unsquished and i started the car all that unburnt fuel created loads of smoke and it ran rough. Replaced the pipe and everything is back to normal, although there is still a mystery of why there is a seeming vacuum inside the idle control piping which squishes it.

So here's the latest fellas,
It's turns out to be a software issue with my simtek, which is good news considering all the worst cases! From what I can make out as my phone signal was poor, the ecu jammed on one of the injectors resulting in the symptoms discribed above. Another ecu has been fitted to give the car a health check and all results look fine. So now just waiting to see if the simtek can be recovered. Apparently there was a recall on pre-04 simtek's with software issues and mine must have slipped the net.

You going to upgrade it to alcatek mate? I'm in a similar situation where I want to do it but I keep hearing of people having teething problems with the upgrade and it sounds like more of a ballache than staying with the old simtek for now.

Yeah tempted to be honest, mainly because it's out and in the hands of those who know. I was going to do it before it decided to play up to stop the cold start issue which was starting to do my head in. I'll see what the lads think when I head up there tomorrow.
