Use a friends car
A friend of mine is working abroad for a year and loaning me his car how do i insure it and tax it if its in his name. Will i have to change the v5 over to my own name thanks

the v5 can be changed to you as you are the keeper (for insurance purposes) but you have to declare your not the owner, plus if you registered keeper you can tax it yourself.
if you dont change the v5 you have to declare your not the owner or keeper, and i think you can tax the car at the PO on behalf of the owner but will need all the relivent documents (tax reminder/mot and your insurance cert would cover it aslong as it got the correct details matching to the car)

A friend lent me his car a few years ago, cos mine got stolen, it was ball ache! My insurance wouldn't insure me on the car because I wasn't the registered keeper. Much the same as people here are saying, it then puts another name on the log book, if anything happens to the car you will have to pay for, (I guess), you think it won't, but it's sods law! It happened to me.
There are cheap cars about, maybe worth picking one up to save the grief! IMHO of course
