Direct TD04 turbo replacements
Hi guys, simple one which I'm surprised I couldn't find on the search.
Subaru is a MY99 uk turbo mapped to below figures on TD04.
What turbo's are a direct swap (ie bolt on) and are suitable for a useable power gain on a 2litre engine?
Also, 3 port solenoid required? Easy to plumb in?
Possibly need a map tweak so thinking slightly bigger (safe) turbo time as well. 300bhp and similar torque is fine, as 284/317 now on standard piddly turbo
Cheers

TD05 16G is a nice little upgrade. We just did one on Carls car (thunder8) who previously had an 04 on his 99 uk turbo, think he made 320bhp.
Still a punchy little turbo like an 04 but will flow a bit more. Can be had pretty cheap too.
Another option (quite a bit more expensive) is one of Andy's 04's. Will make good power but are £450 exchange I think. A good 16G can be had for under £150.
And yep, 3 port is a good idea. Cheap and a 2 min job to plumb in. Turbo swap is also pretty simple, take your time and you'll have no dramas. Should take a couple of hours or a bit longer with half hour tea breaks like I require, lol...

Andy as above Matty said TD05H(16G) will be great turbo on yours,VF28 or VF24 will be good replacement
If its budget VF34 or VF35 will be good too,but as i said if its on the budget TD05H or VF28 or VF28 should be best for you
3-port would suggest Classic one, which seems is best, but i would leave fitting 3-port on the mapper(this take as most 15mins)

Hmm 300-320 is adequate as its a 100,000 engine and drivetrain. I'm only asking really as if the issue I have requires mapping out, I may as well pop another turbo on if cosy effective.
Now I see things like turbos requiring conversion for front/side entry.
Could condone please confirm my TD04 is front/side (can't remember off top of my head Nd it's cold outside!), and assuming the above suggestions need no modification?
TD05 sounds interesting for the outlay.

Thanks Jura. My auto correct went mental on my last post so my apologies if it makes little sense!
I'm looking around and seeing V3 onwards to have the front entry like my TD04 so that's what I should be looking out for if I choose this route.
I'm going to see what funds are like and also overtime at work as I haven't the expendable cash readily available, hense my methodical approach and gathering of information.

What's the issue then Andy, was it not apparent when the car was mapped initially ??
I'd personally avoid the older VF turbo's and try and find a good 16G. They are a popular turbo upgrade and you may find one already converted which saves a bit of time and hassle. I'm sure Carl paid £120 for his already converted and it's In super condition.

I have a couple more things to check/change first as I'm doing this on a tight budget ( is there such a thing with Subaru ownership?) but if a map tweak is needed then I'll acquire the turbo beforehand if funds allow.
It may end up being something totally unrelated to the map but we'll see and if required beforehand I'll take it to a specialists (Harvey or Richard Henry are my preferences) to have a looksy.

Hmm sounds good. I'm surprised at the torque though, especially mine running well over 300lbft. I'll see what comes up at the right time but if the issue gets sorted I may leave it. If not, more power but careful power

99-00' Jap Import WRX Turbo required... :-(
Hi all, I have recently got hold of a 2000 shape classic WRX and my turbo is shot (i think anyway as i have NO Boost and NO BOV action..!) p.s after a mate took off the exhaust i could not move the impellers with my fingers at all..!) I want to know what exactly i need as the correct direct fit replacement and of course if any one has one they no longer need then i'm your man (paypal ok...?) having looked at it its a front side entry TD 05 and i want to replace it with a similar turbo. I could email a photo to anyone if my explanation is that poo..! ;-) I would like to achieve around 300 BHP. Any advice please...?? Thanks a lot.

But ££?
Compared to most on Scoobynet, Martyn, I run my Impreza on a very tight budget. Do most servicing myself and the like. So I'd like to find a 2nd hand good used turbo IF I go for the swap.
Having been in contact with Harvey several times today, I'm just hanging fire until the issue is irradiated, whether by replacement parts or mapping it out
The above turbo's would surely come in a a lot more ££ over the suggested TD05

An Andy Forrest TD04 hybrid would be a better bet if you were going down that route, but you arent.
As someone has already mentioned (but I will expand upon, as it was what Id come to say), your car requires a straight entry turbocharger, but TD05s were manufactured with a 90° inlet.
As you look around you will see a mixture of both types. The difference is that the 90° entry turbos are original and the straight entry turbos have had their 90° elbow machined off to suit later cars.

Presuming he heats the turbo with a bearing heater or in an oven at a guess then. Are we talking a couple of thou nip with regards to interference? Also when hit and expanded, what stops the cover dropping out?

Dumb me mis-read Rapid STI's post as easiest way.
Cover can't "drop out", it's bolted to the core, Andy.
The insert/conversion piece, could in theory, however it's highly unlikely.

That's a kind offer Mr H.
Iirc you're a welder by trade from your other thread? I've flirted with it but at work there are specialist structural bays so I rarely get the chance with being a fitter by trade.

I'll see how finances pan out and what moolah I can conjure up. Could always pop down for a rendezvous as I'm only 90 mins away.
