Default The Subaru 'Workout'...

My 2005 model Blob Type 20 has a moderately perceptible sort of 'bounce' to its ride, apparent almost from nothing right up to higher speed. On the way home from collecting the car, my mate christened it the 'Subaru Workout'.

I seem to remember reading something on here that said the AST coilovers can produce such an effect, but I'm starting to find it bothering now and wondered if it could be anything else.

I've checked the rear wheels and they appear to be concentric, and I've discounted the fronts being distorted as I'm sure it would be felt through the steering.

It does it coasting with the clutch dipped and the revs dropped right down, which makes me think it's not a characteristic of the engine configuration either.

Am I worrying over nothing, or is there possibly something else wrong that I should look for?

Thanks for any help.

Excuse me if I 'bounce' this back up a bit before it drops off the page.

Well that suspension shouldn't feel like it's oscillating like that.

You could try adjusting them.

My old 93 WRX suffered this.

It did have aftermarket coilovers (from previous Jap owner), with pillow *****.

I expect the dampers were generically stiff as hell and that they must've been on their hardest settings.

It was ludicrous; the frequency of the bouncing. I expect girls would've loved it though...

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I had the coilovers rebuilt by AST a few weeks ago and now they're on the middle setting all round. It did it on the hardest setting too so, I'll have to try backing them right off and see what happens.

Bounce like that is sometimes a frequency clash with the springs/damping and tyres. Try altering tyre pressures to see if that helps. My Hawkeye does it when I wind the damping up too strongly as the tyres become the suspension. It's particularly bad first thing when it's colder....

I have separate rebound and compression adjusters and it can do it when either are wound up too far.

Another reason could be lowering the car too far and it can kick off when you catch a small bump and the car bounces on and off the bump stops. This is a common Subaru trait with cars that have a lowering spring kit fitted as the bump stops are long and annoyingly close to the normal ride height position to act as riding rate springs.

It was why I went for coil overs in the first place.

Thanks for that Mark. There's a few more things for me to check there. AST set the ride height when they rebuilt the coilovers and I've not adjusted it since.

The car's off to Litchfield's for a service next week, so hopefully if I've not sorted it by then, they'll have a look at it.
