It's a 2000 plate classic. Truthfully I'm going for power but for the time being I'm just after info

IMO I would go for 2.1 stroker or 2.35 if the money isnt an issue. 2.1 is a cheaper option comparing to 2.35.

Do some search on forged 2,5s.

To sump up: No replacement for displacement........for road car you can beat 2,5s torque.........but for more than 450 you might wannna pin or cdb it

Cost is basically similar to 2,1.

The 2.5 is the weakest of the subaru engines, and we are not just talking internals here but the block itself has those inherent weaknesses built in (too little metal between the cylnders so issues of cracking hence pinning liners but still they can slip).
Its not the best block for you tbh, you will have problems with the torque and your clutch and gearbox, then the issues with insurance, re registering with DVLA as a 2.5 etc, all hassle you dont need and want to avoid.
You would be best either staying 2ltr and forging or going 2.1, as for the no replacement for displacement, well there is but a twin scroll setup really requires avcs to make the most of it from a 2ltr engine, more responsive than any 2.5ltr ive driven (more lag even though it has a greater displacement).

I would go Stroker route but any big build is going to cost many thousands
