Default OIL CATCH CAN

Are these absolutely necessary?

What are people's opinions on the advantages or disadvantages of them?

Have you had one then decided to remove it as some have done with things like BOV's?

I get a puff of smoke from my car now and again. This is caused by oil vapour from the engine being returned to the cold air intake. When changing my turbo to IC pipe i noticed a build op of oil in the turbo just waiting to be blown into the IC and then the engine to get burned off, this causing the puff of smoke. By routing the vent pipes to a catch tank this would be prevented.

If they`re so important why didn`t the Subaru boffins fit them as standard?

I think there more beneficial on tuned cars as opposed to standard. It's easier just to vent back into the inlet and let the engine burn it off. Less serviceable parts that way i suppose.

They were not fitted for several reasons, Cost and maintenance. non return to sump items need to be checked regular and emptied, and catch can cleaned out.

return to the sump ones are much more expensive.

but the most important reason being the European emission regulations, they have to re-route the vapor back into the engine, but as said this causes oil vapor and deposits on the turbo, and it can affect mixture and cause det etc

its also handy to do if you need the space under the inlet, you can ditch all the pipework.

emission regulations i assume, if your not venting back into the engine its venting to atmosphere.
