IAM skills day @ Stowe circuit, Silverstone
I went on this today, I didn't see any other scoobys so I thought it worth posting up about it.
IAM- Institute of Advanced Motorists, is a charity and non- profit making organisation. I'm sure there are members on here. It seeks, through it's members to promote good, safe, progressive driving. It's easy to join, has a website, membership costs around £30 per annum. At first you join as an associate member and attend local monthly meets where you go out on observed drives with a designated full member. This progresses eventually to taking the Advanced drivers test which after passing quallifies you for full membership.
The skills days are aimed at improving car handling skills in a controlled environment, handling skills the driver can take to the road and track.
The format is a morning or afternoon session, each of 3 hours with an instructor on a 2 participants per instructor basis. It works 15min on track 15 min off, which is 6 sessions each of approx 6-8 laps of the Stowe circuit over the three hours. Cost was £129 and was open to non members.
I learned a great deal and thoroughly enjoyed my session. There were a wide range of cars taking part, I was actually paired with a guy in a maclaren, but all levels of cars and skill.
I understand they are looking at Goodwood and other circuits in addition to Silverstone and Croft in Yorkshire for next year but I will certainly be waiting for Silverstone to come around again.
