Unhappy Advice please, totally fed up :-\

Hi had my impreza WRX for just over a year I've had to have the engine completely rebuilt, the turbo has also been rebuilt and now the gearbox has gone.

Tbh I've totally given up anyone have an idea how much to get it rebuilt or where or what it's worth without the box up for sale?

It's an 02plate. 5Speed manual.

Cheers guys

When you say the gearbox has gone, what is actually wrong. 5 Speed boxes can be had for cheapish money, you just need to get the right one.

I'm assuming it's the gearbox that's gone still drives but makes a very loud rattling/grinding noise in 2nd 3rd and 4th and in neutral on tick over rattles

Could be as simple as your clutch release bearing

Shouldn't that have been replaced when the clutch was though? The clutch was replaced when the engine was about 4000miles ago

Its quite possible for a clutch to fall to bits regardless of mileage. If thats been a hard 4000 miles then perfectly feasable. It could even have been a poor quality kit that was fitted. Was a full kit fitted or just the pressure and friction plate.

Definitely not had a hard life had to run the engine in for the 1st thousand miles and I use it as my daily driver so can't afford to 'drive it like I stole it' lol it should have been the full kit I think I'll call the guys that did it and check now tho.

Deffo bearing then, sounds either a dodgy bearing or more likely they didn't change it !

Not sure how long to change on a Scooby (mine comes this week ) but part wont be much. Take it to another garage and get them to inspect the clutch to see if it has been changed - should be ok to drive still, just anoying

Buy the sounds of it you bought yourself a badly kept example in the first place,Subaru Impreza's are quite bullet proof when well maintained.but as said before a 5 speed gear box can be had for reasonable money but check the clutch first.

The car is Blue..... if that matters? lol it's done 102,000 miles has a full service history..... so at least been well maintained (don't know how hard its been driven before I got it, i'd imagine the work ive had to pay for it's had quite a hard life) everything except the exhaust is standard on it. I'll see if I can get it to a specialist to inspect before speaking to the guys that did the work first I'm not going to name and shame or anything like that until I know for sure as it's not the right way to go about it.

I'd say that sounds like a first motion shaft bearing issue.
In neutral, the main gear cluster is disengaged.
With your foot off the clutch the first motion shaft spins, but the release bearing is doing diddly squat.
If the noise goes when you depress the clutch I'd say that's the point where the release bearing is involved, and also the point where the first motion shaft stops turning.
If the release bearing was the issue, I'd expect it to be noisy with your foot on rather than off.

hmmmm.... anyone nearby Luton who fancies coming to have a listen? I've just taken it to 'Mr Clutch' one of the clutch specialist garages in the town and the mechanic got in took it about 20m up the road before brining it back and saying it was not the clutch and in fact the gearbox..... so i don't really know what to do now?

Zen Performance are in northampton, which is not too far away, i'd take it there, you should be able to pick up a 5 speed box off one of the breakers on here for around £300.

Or if your handy with spanners it will take about a day to DIY, it's not difficult just a bit time consuming if your on your back under the car using axel stands.

If you want a reliable recon box then speak to A.p.i as they stock them on the shelf, otherwise speak to Mattybr5 as he is very good and has loads of parts from broken cars and is a top bloke to deal with
