Oh F***-it ive split a piston - need advice on way forward
06 2.5 wrx
I've had a rattle for a couple of months, got to the garage a couple of times for it to be checked only for it to disappear on arrival
As it was still pulling hard, with no smoke and not burning oil my assumption was a pully bearing but whilst at Subaru for MOT they have said classic sound for cracked piston skirt.
Cracked skirt will still allow full compression and as it gets warm/hot the sound will start to go
Ok so now im a bit stumped on the next move and the scary costs!!
Subaru are saying min £2.25k - if its just the piston, replace with forged cosworth, cos gaskets and a large oil slop guard
If its scored the shells on the crank im at the the thin end of £6k < not going to happen as car can't be worth much over that
Any advice, suggested costs, better way to deal with, experience?
I replaced an engine on an Lancia Intergralle a few years ago and the cost killed me for a long long time
Help?

Take it to paul at Zen performance, they are on your doorstep and one of the best in the business
You will get a full rebuild with forged internals and arp head studs for ish £3k dependant on spec / parts used and the problem will go away and you will be good for circa 450 bhp.
DON'T USE MAIN STEALERS.

Give me a call or let me have a number and l'll call you to discuss the repair / rebuild at sensible prices.
Good Luck!, no matter what,

Thank you. I have it booked in for its first service and MOT (with me) on Friday. Hoping it's good news.
If I was facing a 3k repair bill I really don't know what I'd do!

I had read that this is a weak point and a common fault on this engine, but in fairness I drive it hard - as my other half kindly pointed out when I came home with the costs on Saturday :-(

Yes I'd read that too, but I still went and bought one because I much prefer the looks. I get told off for revving too hard too

^^^^ OP, this is the man i would be talking too and only about an hour or so from you. I'm sure the others offering their service in this thread are also great, but i can recommend Mr Finch here from personal experiance.

OP, have Subaru actually heard the noise you mean?
Have they looked closely into it?
Perhaps it's not a chocolate piston skirt - is there a chance of that?
