UK Spec Scoob vs 328i MPG
Needing a bit of help here!
Speaking to a few people and they are saying the BMW E36 328i is as fast a UK 2000 Scooby Turbo yet lots better on fuel? I am still on the search for a good Scoob due to a nice quote from the insurance company saying fully comp for me (38 years old, clean licence) is coming to £500 so this is excellent. Thing is though everyone is saying even driving off boost the Scooby's are incredibly thirsty? I would have thought off boost they should be like any other 2.0 AWD. This will be my daily driver to which I cover 45 miles per day and 8 of those miles a day are town driving, the rest are B roads. So I am a bit confused due to as much as I love Scoob's I cant afford £100 per week which I have been told I will be spending on fuel.....Can anyone here who is knowledgeable on Scoob's tell me if a UK spec 1998 2000 Turbo will be as horrific as I am led to believe on fuel.
Thanks in advance for any help

I had a 97 UK turbo and a 99 UK turbo
The 97 was modded and was a lot faster than my mates e46 330 and on a trip to Alton towers did same fuel
I had a 328 touring and got rid when I found my white wagon . The impreza is a lot more fun and quicker lower end . The bm would be better top end mind
Bm parts were really expensive too

Some rough maths however, 45 miles a day x 5 days (assuming it would be 5 days commuting) = 225 miles, now thats roughly a tank of fuel (roughly) which is around £60 give or take, so assuming its the same all month then £240 per month on fuel. I wouldnt like to spend that much on my commute.
Is there not a rail option instead which would reduce the cost and allow your scoob to be an evening and weekend car?

I had a 328i e36, used it everyday, was a good car till I lost the rear on a bend doing 30mph (witness) and put me into 3 trees, on the other side of the road. Tho it was a lovely car I didn't trust it in the bends after. I now have a uk2000 turbo w reg, I would say the fuel is same if not better in the Subaru, I'm getting at least 210miles for £40. So 33.9mpg, im 22 so I wouldn't say i drive slowly but I don't thrash it.

Bmw e36 328i was the second car i owned after my old R5 Gt turbo there fun if you like side ways action when it rains but can be a right handfull to control even at low speeds when the roads are wet not only that the straight 6 24v motor is very thirsty in my opinion 28mpg if you drive like a granny and they hold 6.5litres of oil which is not cheap when its time to do a service if you do it yourself id get the subaru

I can get 33mpg out of my 2004 WRX wagon with ppp, my 97 STI Type r does around 28 both off boost driving a bit like miss daisy is in the back, mixed driving with the odd squirt brings that down to around 25 and 20 respectively, heavy right foot can see a tank gone on both in less than 150 miles, so i think your fuel bill will be circa a tank a week which is around £60/70, but if i was doing your miles i'd consider a cheap runabout and keep the scoob for the weekends.
My mate had a 325 and sold it because he couldn't get much more than 25mpg driving real easy and the parts were VERY expensive he spent a small fortune in a year on brakes tyres and a couple of other things, that in total cost over £2k and he didn't do big miles or cane it.
Scoobs can be reasonable on fuel if your not mental, i'm not a BMW fan because everyone i know that has had one has spent a fortune on them and everyone knows they are driven by d!ckheads.

328 as fast as a scoob, lmao righto
I;ve got a 528 which is heavier but usese the same engine as the 328, will be more economical on motorways if driven steady, general day to day if you take it easy in the scoob it will get better mpg.
It's not an out and out performance car, its more about sitting on a motorway at 80-90mph all day everyday

Imprezas are strange things when it comes to fuel. Mine will do 30+mpg on the motorway at 60-70mph, which is nice. Other than that, it'll do about 18-20mpg regardless of how I drive it.
Honestly, if fuel is going to be an issue then think about it for a long while and do your sums before you buy one. MY01 WRX does only 50-80 miles a week and I've been putting in £20 a week for as long as I can remember

a standard 328 is as fast as a standard turbo 2000 and is better on fuel however driven even the inline 6 M power cars are known to be good on fuel considering there cubic capacity/power output

Great and helpful replies.......Thank you!
The Scoob I am looking at has a PPP conversion which is all new to me as I am new to Scooby's but told she is running 250bhp so 0-60 should be late 5's to early 6's I would have thought?
Interesting about parts as I would have thought they would have been up there with BMW parts prices?!

In my opinion, having owned both Uk turbo and 328i, the Uk turbo is by far the superior car except for comfort as mentioned in earlier post. I couldn,t get rid of the 328i quick enough. I found it a very boring car especially having owned 3 scoobs previously. Now on my 5th Scoob. Steve.

Another thing I forgot to ask! What are the engines like to work on as they look rather complex, cant really work them out, not like a FWD and not like a RWD......From what I can make out the spark plugs look in a very strange position?

I get 300 - 325 miles in the summer doing 50/50 town / motorway driving. That was being reasonable with the right foot. Would see 280 if I drove with a smile on my face.
Winter - knock 15 - 25 miles off those totals for winter driving.
Daily commute was 48 miles - London to Hatfield / Welwyn Garden City

I've had both, a late e36 328i m sport, which I loved, as said VERY tail happy in the wet, 3rd gear @ 20mph off a roundabout and it lit up the rears. But on the commute I did was really good on fuel, considering it was a 2.8 litre, regularly over 300 miles to the tank.
My uk wagon however was always 240-250 miles, regardless of journey it seems.
Impreza is MUCH easier to drive fast, but more satisfying? I'm not so sure, was more rewarding to drive the Beemer quickly. But thts just IMHO.
I do keep thinking of swapping my bug for an M3, but I do love my scoob :-)

I find the impreza engine the easiest to work on for basic servicing / replacing maintenance items etc. The plugs are in an akward position but follow the guide on here and do some searching and you wont go far wrong

Miss my old BMW tho, I still see it about, must have 200,000 on the clocks Now, prefer the interior in the BMW to the Subaru. But bmw's are so common these days
