Air lock mate, it's not circulating,
Engine off, squeeze every hose you can see, particularly the bottom one, loads of times,
Cap off expansion tank and fill slowly,
By slowly I mean SLOWLY, a trickle of water is enough.
Top up to level.
Top up the other bottle on the inside of the passenger side wing till its at the max mark.
All caps back on, run engine with the heaters switched on, but on low.
Keep an eye on the level In the expansion tank, but be aware it is a pressurised system, and it will overflow when it gets hot.
Once your temp gauge starts coming up, do not remove the cap until the engine is cold again, then top up to correct level

Slowly because their a swine to bleed, there's no bleed nipples to open like there are on some cars, I've done mine this way many many times and always worked first time for me.
Maybe worth starting again, if you do, I would remove the top hose from the top of the radiator, and back fill the rad through there, refit, then fill the expansion tank as slowly as possible, and be squeezing the hoses.
Then run with the heater on low, and it should work a treat.
They are just swines mate

a good way to refil the cooling system is to take the pipe off the header tank that leads to the turbo. fill up slowly with a funnel and dont let it glug, you are then filling the system from the bottom up and air is expelled thru the header tank. When you see fluid appear in the bottom of the header tank you can finish off filling the normal way. Put the hose back on and start up, heaters set to hot and let it idle upto temp.
Another thing to try is to remove and inspect the thermostat, test by dropping in hot water and see if it opens.

if u run without it will take ages and i mean ages for car to heat up it still seems like u have a air lock another way is when ure car is running and header tank full keep squeezing bottom rad hose and watch the header tank with lid of of course and u should see it bubble and burp everytime u squeeze rad hose just keep doing it until it stops burping and u should have all the air out and feel the bottom of rad if it starts to get hot on both sides u should of sorted it works for me done it that way few times hope u get it sorted buddy

you could try running with out a thermostat for a short while to see if the water is getting around. it will take ages to get warm and with gobble petrol if you drive it much as it will be running rich/cold adv, especially in this cold weather. top and bottom rad hose should eventually get hot with the fan kicking in and out.
You mentioned that there is water on the passenger carpet, thats a sign the heater matrix is leaking. what year is the car?
