new age sti semi closed deck block from a v7/8/9 sti would be good for that sort of power no need for rear thrust conversion as per on the cbd's, also you will save a fair few pennys over a cbd

Thanks for the quick replies. I remember reading somewhere V7 JDM blocks were ones to look out for, forged pistons and such, but if V8 and 9's are good for that type of power as well I won't bother narrowing my search.
Would a twin scroll setup be more suited for my plans (sprints and hill climbs) or would a standard turbo setup be better?

For sprints and hill climbs a 500bhp turbo car will be a tad on the laggy side unless you spend some serious cash.
I'd go with a 2.5 and an sc36 or a VF34 for that application, i read that recon VF34 could be had for £450, going to be by far the cheapest way to get the low down grunt required for that application.
You could also have the block pinned so it will be good for 500bhp should you decide to go there.
I suggest you read shauns thread in projects and send john felstead a pm and see what he recommends.

I'm actually already running a VF34 which made 346bhp on my 04 WRX. I thought they pretty much ran out of puff at around 350-380

yes a 2.5 would be brilliant on track that is what i am running at the moment a fully forged 2.5 matched with a stock location billet gt30 awesome power spools really well, the block is being converted to a closed deck block by a.s performance at the moment for the ability to run more boost and go north of 500bhp in the future
but my road car is a 2.5 with forged pistons and sti 10 rods running a td05 20g and that goes just as well limited to 430-450 bhp with the standard rods but sort of package is excellent value for money in my opinion, some people don't like the 2.5 but i think they are great plenty of low down torque and fast spool
we have a fully forged 2.5 here if your interested in this option![Norty](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/norty.gif)
but the best value for money on a 500bhp plus engine a a 2.1 in a semi closed deck block in and around 500 the above option would be great![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)

OK application is the key word here, a track car as mentioned in your first post is a different proposition to a sprint / hill climb car as in your second post.
Track car: 2.1 , front mount and oil cooler 500bhp spool not really an issue, 20 min sessions at a time at full chat not so good for a 2.5 that tend to run hot, and you don't need oodeles of torque you want a high rev limit to hold on to your gears in bends.
Sprint car: 2 min blast every two hours, don't need oil cooler, or front mount so theres circa £1500 that can be spent pinning or better still turning it into a cdb on a 2.5 with a nitride crank, you want the low down pull for a sprint car, torque and quick spool is the name of that game.
You need the right tool for the job.

You are looking for 500bhp on V-power or V-power plus methanol?
We are run Open Deck Block 2.1L at 490bhp without the problem,we are done numerous track days and numerous drag runs.
2.0L Open deck block if its right build can be good choice if you are looking at 500-550bhp,2.5L never tried and can't comment on that
Speak to few mappers and engine builders about their recommendations and from this I would go
