if anyone can be of help or link me to a good over heating related thread it will be much appreciated.

I had this happen to my audi s4 and my scooby.
Audi was a thermostat broken. It dumped all the coolant as it was boiling away in the tank and must have burst a pressure relief valve or something
Scooby was the header tank burst a hole and spread coolant all over the engine. And that stunk and made alot of white smoke.
Thats my experiences with overheating anyway

hey mate
could be thermostat is blocked or faulty? easy to test chuck it in a cup of boiling water and see if it opens.
Water pump- try taking the lid off of the coolant reservoir and seeing if the water is circulating.
Or worst is last Headgasket could be gone and generally running over temp.
I am in shropshire mate where bouts are you?

Oh yea the audi thermostat was inside the waterpump so had to change that. So might have been the waterpump issue aswell. I think waterpumps are a common thing aswell as thermostats.

I had this happen to my Ibiza. The cooling fans were not coming on due to a blown fuse. Problem was solved by new fuse!
Had the same problem on my classic too - turned out to be an ESU issue, so I had a manual over-ride button installed next to the fog light buttons. Never had an issue since or had to use the over-ride button.

I was going to whip it out this weekend and give it a test on the hob with one of mummys pans
i think the thermostats are no more than £15, so im really hoping its that because it will be a nice cheap fix
where about would the thermostat be located on my 1999 uk turbo 2000? anyone got any pictures etc?
oh and @Pedroturbo im from around the Ludlow Area

You are bound to lose some coolant doing that.
Do yourself a favour: replace coolant with new, of the correct type, and DO, PLEASE, do a search on here for how to refill without airlocking the car. This is vitally important, trust me.
It MIGHT be worth asking a local garage to do a sniff test of the coolant BEFORE changing it. This checks for the presence of hydrocarbons in the coolant, which would show the cylinder head gasket has gone
