I had this happen to my audi s4 and my scooby.

Audi was a thermostat broken. It dumped all the coolant as it was boiling away in the tank and must have burst a pressure relief valve or something
Scooby was the header tank burst a hole and spread coolant all over the engine. And that stunk and made alot of white smoke.

Thats my experiences with overheating anyway

hey mate

could be thermostat is blocked or faulty? easy to test chuck it in a cup of boiling water and see if it opens.

Water pump- try taking the lid off of the coolant reservoir and seeing if the water is circulating.

Or worst is last Headgasket could be gone and generally running over temp.

I am in shropshire mate where bouts are you?

Oh yea the audi thermostat was inside the waterpump so had to change that. So might have been the waterpump issue aswell. I think waterpumps are a common thing aswell as thermostats.

I had this happen to my Ibiza. The cooling fans were not coming on due to a blown fuse. Problem was solved by new fuse!

Had the same problem on my classic too - turned out to be an ESU issue, so I had a manual over-ride button installed next to the fog light buttons. Never had an issue since or had to use the over-ride button.

Cheers guys

You are bound to lose some coolant doing that.

Do yourself a favour: replace coolant with new, of the correct type, and DO, PLEASE, do a search on here for how to refill without airlocking the car. This is vitally important, trust me.

It MIGHT be worth asking a local garage to do a sniff test of the coolant BEFORE changing it. This checks for the presence of hydrocarbons in the coolant, which would show the cylinder head gasket has gone
