I rememeber when i had my cavalier. paid for a full service (including pollen filter) they had ticked the box to say they replaced it and couldnt explain why there wasn't one in there.

I used to replace them on every car as hay feaver is a pig

Thsi is true. When i first got my classic i bought a new pollen filter, went to fit it and there wasnt one in there! So took it back.
No wonder i get dried leaves hitting me in the face

I've seen alot worse.

Something to bear in mind is some better quality pollen filters are impregnated with carbon/charcoal to absorb odours and nasty gases, so some people think they are dirty when they aren't (although this one is)...cheap filters are just plain white.

The whistle could be coming from a bung in that area from the bulkhead. The one on my RA was out of shape and caused a noise etc

Mine wasnt a whistle as it was properly out of shape but was an air noise that got louder with speed but not acceleration if that makes sense.

When I did mine I think I still had the one from the factory in. I don't use the car much so I clean it every year (just hoover) and I'll change it every 2-3 years

No, the slot for them is behind the glovebox, couple of screws to drop that out. None of the classics seem to come with them but you can fit one.
Dont need one, just adds weight

Does it whistle when you tell lies? If so, you have Jiminy Cricket riding behind the glovebox.
