PetrolHeads and marques with "Soul"
What makes a petrol head? And what marques old and new have "soul"? (The Impreza?)
Are German marques more sterile and soul-less? Are we all petrol heads just for using this site?

To me petrol heads are people with a fascination with all sorts of cars and bikes, especailly fast ones. I don't think people into one marque or model in that marque are necessarily true petrol heads, in fact quite often they aren't.
For instance a lot of people on this board know a heck of a lot about Imprezas, but many seem to know virtualy nothing about other marques.... true petrol heads take an interest in all marques and although they may have a preference for one they do not dismiss others like many people do on here.
As for soul that is a harder one to answer. All in my opinion of course, but to me BMWs and Mercedes rarely have soul, doesn't make them bad cars... just they are very teutonic in their execution. Ferraris have soul as do most Lambos, Audis don't yet the original Quattro does. Jags do but not the XF, X type or S type. I think it's something to do with heritage, motorsport history and a little bit of quirkiness.
As for the Impreza I think the classic has soul, the rest of them not really and the hatch??....F**k no!

Or refinement, could a newage Impreza have less "soul or character" than a classic because its a smoother drive.
My cars have been 205 GTI (1.6 and 1.9) - A GTi-6 and a 94WRX and now a TypeR. Which would you say has the least character?
Also with all this in mind, if you buy a merc or audi, do you lose the right to wear the petrol head tag lol?

You've made sense for once. Is soul "Character"? Does a car that has a tendency to work when it feels like it rather than being 100% reliable have more character?

In the late 90s/early 2000s when the Impreza was at its most popular I could never understand why so many Impreza enthusiasts dismissed the Mitsubishi Evo and vice versa. I drove both and thought they were both fantastic machines, I stuck with Imprezas because of the servicing and the small fuel tank on the Evo, not becuase I thought it was a bad car, on the contrary it was stunning.

I would consider myself to be a petrol head, having owned everthing from an alfa 75 to a citreon visa gti!But i dont think just liking cars makes u a true petrol head, knowing how they actually work and getting your hands dirty with the cars does,in my opinion anyway

its a love of cars not mechanics
my dad is a very good mechanic and learnt to fix his car because he had to due to not being able to afford to pay to get it fixed when he was young, but he has no interest in fast cars whatsoever.

Been thinking about this and I reckon there's less real petrol heads around than you might think. It would be fun if someone had time to create a quiz spanning all marques and motorsport disciplines and see how we all score.

I regard myself as a petrol head for a number of reasons. One of which is the fact that beyond spending time with my wife and kids I would rather spend my time in the company of cars than people.
That might also make me a sad git but so be it.

Yes a woman can be a petrol head, I've been with a few that certainly have, not just cars either. I've owned loads and loads of cars including RS, mr2, 205 1.9 gti, Elise's, several 'high end' Imprezas, golf gti's etc. Vehicles I've most enjoyed driving and owning? 2 litre white Scudo van and a Suzuki sj413.

You say that but is it about knowing who or what marque won what race in what year or is it more about knowing how to tune/map/modify?. Is it neither, is it just being passionate as I'd imagine (and sorry to sound sexist here Emmaroids) but would a female know these things, but still be equally or more passionate about cars/bikes than us?

I love all cars and bikes but I recon its got a lot to do with the sound they make and the way they smell ( burnt or unburnt fuel, I'm not talking about magic trees here ) it just so happens that the quicker more powerful cars and bikes tend to sound better.

I would say a true petrol head likes most things mechanical , even a nice looking twin turbo v10 stuck on a display stand ( usually thinking about what they could fit said engine into )
Imprezas don't have soul , tbh I can't think of many Japanese cars that do
Or German come to that
Very clinical and user friendly
Things like beetles , skoda rapide , Austin allegro have more soul ,( not stunning cars )
But come from an era where cars had character and names and if you talked to em nice they would start
Or maybe I've watched to many herbie films
