Who mapped my car? Simtec!
Hi All,
It's not my car, it's actually my dad's car (V4 Sti, 2.5 RCM lump). He needs a little work doing on the simtec as he has a couple of problems.
Now the problem is, the garage he sent it to are refusing to tell him who mapped his car as they have now become mappers and want to charge for the new licence etc...
Now the question is, who mapped it? Mappers..... Do you keep a database? If so is it recorded on reg, chassis number etc?
Hopefully someone can point me on the right track as once it's sorted he want to doing a rolling road map and add some modds.
The simtec was installed and mapped in Bristol.
Thanks in advance.

Tell them to do one, there isn't a license fee on a Simtek!
Mappers do keep a record, try Simon(JGM), Bob Rawle and Duncan(RaceDynamix) as a first port of call, as they are Southern based and travel.
I'm assuming it's a Subaru specialist? If it is, find a new one with that attitude.

You posted as I was typing Gaz.
To the best of my knowledge, Simtek are locked to an extent. I believe any mapper can remap one, but, it needs authorisation from the OM or the distributor. It needs to be a full new map though, not tweaking another's IP.

Thanks guys.
Micky, you're confirming what I suspected. I was hoping the likes of the mentioned may see the post.
If memory serves me correctly I remember being told it was mapped by the creator of simtec. Wasn't the creation a dual effort and parties have now separated hence simtec v2 and alcatec?

the "creator" was Steve Simpson although he didn't actually build/design any ECU's as such (no doubt he had input in their development)
original Simtek is actually an Alcatek product, and it is these which are now re-branded
the "new" Simtek is a GEMS unit...............

Hi Markfey,
If you are cool with a spanner - remove the ecu cover and ecu and remove the cover..
txt or email me a picture of the board.. I can then tell you the ecu (whether Simtek2 or Alcatek) and if Alcatek I can contact them to tell you who mapped it..

I'm pretty sure it's a simtec. Am I correct in thinking that its in the passenger footwell?
Thanks Simon, I'll get my dad on it in the morning. I've mentioned your name to him and Surrey rolling road several times so hopefully we'll be able to organise something soon.

It gets better simon, he's just rung me and told me that there was a wire coming out of it that he traced and led to no where.
He then checked his map switch and found that wasn't connected either.
As you can guess, he's not a happy bunny.

Another update...
The garage have come back to him now and said it was Steve Simpson that mapped the car.
Simon.... If you were to do another map would a licence fee have to be paid or can this be avoided? Or... Would it be best to contact Steve Simpson first?

Thanks Alan!!!
I've spoken to Steve SIMPSON and what a top bloke!
As originally thought, it appears it's the garage/tuner/technician at not the mapper who has royally screwed him over.
All booked in with Steve now so it should all be sorted soon.
Thanks for your help all, especially JGM.
