All I can say from what I've seen is that some imports have blown no-3 piston due to the low octane in our fuel but if you use sul you should be fine, also you could use an octane booster.
Just don't let this put you off as these car are great.
Hope this helps

Fswfc,
Dont be put off by the scare stories you read in the press or see on tv.
I had my 93wrx for 3 years with no problems at all.Started 1st time every time for 3 years had air con ,bigger wheels,Hks exhaust, all these were on it when i bought it so i didnt have to buy any add ons.Parts were no problem as was servicing.
My advice=Go for it!!

Hi,

I'm on my second jap import, and can't fault either of them. Parts and servicing are not really a problem.

Where are you buying from? as you are not far from me.

Phil.

Blackbeast (MY94 WRX Wagon) is jap import. Have had it for a year with no real problems.

Run it on NUL (95 RON normal unleaded) and will have Broquet in it soon to help as well.

Insurance is interesting as it is a) jap import, b)modified, but Schofields have insured me for a very reasonable sum.

Parts/Servicing, well, I use GDA Sportscar Imports, who are a Pulsar/Sunny GTiR specalist, but they also do impreza's They are excellent (see my GDA thread somewhere on here!)

Think I'd go for another import next time round, only difference would be that it would have to be STi.

I'd buy an import over UK every time, just run on SUL (and octane boost if you can) and enjoy the car.
