log book not registered in my name but need to tax car
Hi, the guy I bought my car from gave me a battered log book and the green slip has all his details filled in (so I can't fill it in and apply for a new one!
Is there a way I can still tax the car over the phone? the only other way is to apply for a new v5 which is fine but it can take a week to arrive.
Obviously I have valid insurance and an MOT cert
I tried to do it online but it said the TAX may end up with a previous owner
thanks

Tippex out his details on the green slip, get a V10 form from DVLA online.
Fill out both in your name, and perhaps go to a different post office. You should be able to walk out of there with a disc.
I'm an administrator in the motor trade, and tippex on green slips - and even on V5's is fine, happens quite a lot when a deal falls out of bed.
Maybe she didn't give you the disc as the name on the green slip was his name and not yours - hence the insurance wouldn't have matched.

I did the tip ex thing and went to the post office, because the guy I bought it from had used this slip for tax himself (it has a date stamp) I can't tax it. I phoned the DVLA and now I need to wait 4 - 6 weeks for a new v5. WTF am I meant to do? they won't take my money! lol

Yeah think I'll have to, somewhere like this? http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/contactus...al_office.aspx
I assume these offices have the facilities/power to let me tax it?

Get a mate with a motor trade policy to do it
They should take the green slip to tax the car even with tipex on it as said, I have done it many many times with my motor trade certificate, never had a problem to be honest, as long as the name on the green slip matches your insurance you sould be fine, you can also sen the green slip in for a new logbook free of charge with the correct details on and an accompanying letter explaining you never received a log book, you are only suppose to be able to tax a car once on the green slip, and once done they will stamp it to say it has already been presented for tax purposes, they should then ask if you want them to send it off in your name free of charge.

The only way round it is if you take you renewl letter with you. The dvla send a renewl letter out to the registered keeper when the tax is due. You can take this letter along with insurance and mot and they will tax the car. However, the op would not of recieved a renewl letter.

What I mean with the motor trade is if he fills the trader section in on the v5 to a trader he knows then they could go and tax it there and then saves waiting about for the v5 to come back, should have made myself more clear
