Default Running On Which Fuel?

Does the Newage Blob STi have to be run on higher Ron only i.e - VPower / BP Ultimate or can it be run on normal 95Ron. Is it just the classics that have that situation?

Sti's are supposed to be run on 98ron or higher. Super-unleaded is only 97ron so not good enough. The only petrol in the uk thats higher than the 98ron required is Shell v-power, Tesco momentum99, and BP 102.

I'm running a Hawkeye WRX (not STi) in France and everyone here says to use 95.

The petrol cap notice also says 95 only.

Is 95 in the UK different in quality/content? I understand that the 2.5l would probably benefit from 98 or higher but interested to know your thoughts as obviously don't want to destroy the engine but 95 is a fair bit cheaper than 98 over here.

I rarely go looking for the redline and most of my runs are around 100 miles round trip and around 80mph for most of it - the advantages of empty French roads.

Thoughts please ??

Here's a curve ball. The owners hand book says they can be run on 95 ron

So if you disagree with subaru then take it up with them.

97+ ron only, as stated in the handbook (95 in emergencies but its really not recommened as it blows holes in the pistons....)

Mine doesn't. Mine states 98ron or higher. No mention of 95ron what so ever. Mine is an RB320 handbook though so may be different.
I only ever use 99ron but have duel maps with the racerom. Road is mapped for 95ron, race is mapped for 99ron. I never use the road 95ron map but it is there for an emergency.

I doubt very much it says 95ron "only". It will normally say **ron or "higher". You cant over do the ron rating only under do it. Personally i would not risk 95 ron in a 2.5. That's just asking for trouble.

In the sales brochure for the uk300, in the section where it talks about the benefits of the PPP option it states the power is increased to 245ps on 98ron and 235ps on 95ron. Seems unlikely it's be mentioned if 95ron was unsafe? I wonder if the Prodrive ecu tweaks included alterations to run on lower ron fuel? This is obviously a WRX not an STI, and I only know because I'm sad enough to have tracked down the original brochure for my car

As you can see the petrol cap cover clearly says "95ron only", however the owners manual states "95 or higher is recommended" for the WRX (does says 98 or higher for the STi). Given that the specialists I've spoken to over here all (without exception) say that 95 is more than fine and 98 is only really for circuit or hard use I think I'm going to hedge my bets and go with 95 and maybe 1 fill up in 4 as 98 - time will tell I guess.

Other than speculation, hearsay and 3rd hand info, etc. has anyone actually experienced engine problems from running 95 instead of 98?

It would be illegal surely to sell a car which has to be ran on 97/98/99???

Curve ball - in my experience (Classic uk turbo), due to the increased mpg that the super unleaded gave, it was actually saving me money using the good stuff

Well it would seem the sticker in the fuel flap contradicts the handbook. I think the term only in the fuel flat is a translation mistake. Using a higher octane fuel is better and will cause no damage unlike an octane thats too low as its clearly stated in the handbook pic you posted. So there for stating 95ron only is not right. And to answer your question, yes i have experienced a problem using to low an octane fuel It was in a motorbike and it destroyed the pistons. Im not telling you " speculation, hearsay and 3rd hand info". I'm telling you FACT. You can take the advice or you can leave it mate, i really couldn't give a toss !
