2.5 WRX, what a great engine!
I just wanted to put up a thread saying how great the 2.5 engine is. Theres tons of threads saying how bad they are but non saying how good they are.
My wrx has done 64000 miles and runs superb. Its really quick, has huge amounts of tourque and lots of power.
Overall its just a great car and i can't fault it. Anyone else have any Good views on the 2.5?

This all comes down to what the definition of a 'good' engine really is.
If the definition is based on an assembly of components that can be tuned to output figures of over double it's original output then yes its good. This though is generally because to get to those figures, parts will need replacement/uprating from stock that add strength. If it is about having plenty of power/torque out of the box then again it is good.
If the definition is based on the consistency/quality of its manufacture/assembly compared to it's predecessor (for arguments sake we'll call it the 2.0 in UK spec) then it can only be deemed as poor (assuming you base the failure rate from talking to experts who spend their lives rebuilding failed engines).
This isn't to say yours isn't a 'good' assembly but IMO an engine is a mass production of components, compiled into an assembly and any such assembly that has say a 1-100 failure rate is still, in this day and age fairly poor (especially when said manufacturer doesn't own up to the issue!).
I think it should also be taken into account that during the development of the Hawk/Hatch the decision Subaru took to sticking a 2.5 into the Impreza must have involved some consideration of their existing client base. They surely must have known that said engine will be subjected to basic modifications that would enhance power. For that reason to create a product that had failures in standard/lightly tuned spec (e.g the Sti and or a PPP pack) is again a sign of a substandard assembly.
Fact is that with the right components and assembled in the right way it is a fooookin great engine (I love mine since it was fixed!!). Just such a shame that Subaru did such a poor job recognising failures and recalling/repairing them FOC. I suspect it was a question of margins and for UK dealers to recall, strip and sort the hg/ringland issues in the same way that independents do when they fail, would have resulted in the end of the Impreza/WRX range altogether due to the financial impact.
Anyway I've dropped my two penneth worth... shame it was dropped from so high on my horse that it killed a load of worms when it landed on the floor... messy

Lol fail...... "My WRX doesn't run enough boost or bhp to break it's universally criticised poorly executed engine"
I am sure forrester owners would agree with you... oh no their 2.5's fail aswell
My Spec D never missed a beat at 350 bhp but it only had occasional use albeit on track Blind luck given the number that have failed However, you can't deny the extensively published domestic and international criticism on the 2.5 failings. Pleased that yours is ok but recommends on the grounds that is hasn't failed yet is no great comfort.

Like the OP I have a Hawkeye WRX in virtually standard tune and she runs lovely.
Bought the WRX as I wanted an everyday car (already have a garage full of weekend toys and not enough weekends), from what I've read the STi and/or tuned WRX 2.5 may have problems especially if the engines are pushed hard to generate enough heat for the head studs to expand. If I wanted a weekend only STi then I probably would go for one of the last Blobeye STi(8.5) but I do love the look of the Hawks but 2.0 JDM's are a pain to register over here.

Mines running 329bhp at 1.35 boost with vf43 turbo, So not quite standard but then again it may well be ready to explode for all i know but right now its runni great and i just wanted to shout it out and praise the 2.5 for a change

if you haven't already think about cooling options such as ZeroSports thermostat which brought my running temps down considerably. Quality coolant, radiator shroud, turbo blanket, heat shield lagging, header tank spacers...it all helps Controversial I know but taking the under tray off also helped running temps overall

I panicked after starting to mod mine and finding out about the choco-pistons so forged it at 20k miles, nothing was wrong with the engine but subaru wouldnt have coughed up.
Just meant bringing certain mods ahead of my planned schedule. I love the car now I feel confident giving it some

you do go on about the wrx and sti all the time ,nobodys mentioned it.
the 2.5 sti engine is the one that has the problems usually.

I found out that mine had £8k of work to the engine and gearbox done under warranty 18k miles ago. Certainly glad I purchased an extended warranty when I bought it, put it that way.

If you read the initial post
"My wrx has done 64000 miles and runs superb. Its really quick, has huge amounts of tourque and lots of power"
I was just agreeing that the WRX makes a great road car? Why do you always feel the need to spam every thread?

Thanks for that Spam Tommy! That’s another post count for you!

Have to agree with you F1 CJE UK that his continual pollution of every single thread is starting to become very tiring

I heard something the other day which i thought was kinda true for a lot of people, "Everyone hates a Subaru until they drive one"
The EJ motors are awesome. Never had any issues with my 205 and still runs like a dream with over 173,xxxkms on the dial
