It's the 2.5 engines..... As soon as you push them above 380 they go pop apparently. General advice is buy an already forged one or go for the 2.0 litre JDM one..... That's the advice I read on here daily but I personally have Ono had my 2.0 blobeye so can't really say.

age has nothing to do with driving round with a smile on your face
57 yrs and there are plenty of owners out there older than me
Have a 2.5 Hawkeye STI - love the car and really like the low rev torque the 2.5 gives. Makes for a very drivable car. power all across the bands
I know many advise get a 2ltr JDM with the twinscroll there are plenty of threads on the uk 2.5 v JDM 2.0 debate.
as said above if you are lucky enough to come across a fully forged 2.5 then happy days

Wouldn't worry too much about the engine problems. Type in the name and model of any car into google followed by "engine problems" and you'll usually get a load of hits.
Since I was 18 and got my first car I've kept a credit card with a couple of grand limit free and unused in case of a problem. It's been a wise move as it has been used much more on other cars than it ever was on my Hawkeye that suffered HG failure. Some of us have had problems with the 2.5s, others have had no issues at all. Ultimately, running an Impreza for any lengthy period is going to cost an arm and a leg!
The Hawkeye is a good car, and so is the hatch. If you want that old school Scooby flavour try an older model. However it'd be very wrong to think that any engine is bulletproof, especially ones with a high specific output.
But really, you should just get what you want or you'll always be longing for it.

Fair play to you mate. I saw a bloke who must have been late 60's or even 70's driving a Type uk 22B. One advantage to being old is your insurance gets cheaper
