My dad had his Subaru 1.8 DL estate seviced by a franchised dealer locally on Saturday. I looked at his invoice and there`s a charge of £4.90 for" Enviromental disposal of hazardous waste". When I quered this I was told it was done as a metter of course on all services for the disposal of the oil and filter. Has anyone else seen this before? It seems to me another example of customers being ripped off.

Yes I have heard of this , it cost a fortune to get rid of used oil and filters . My mate has a garage and he has to dispose of oil and filters properly or he faces a big fine .

I had my car serviced the other day and was charged £2.25+vat to dispose of the oil. This is common practice.

Much like not pouring used oil into the main sewer! Huge fines if you are caught!

I'm fairly sure my local tip has an oil bank where it can be disposed of free of charge.

We are charged £25.00 for waste oil disposal, tho this charge is only for the paper work. Oil filters are charged at £44.95 per 205 litre barrel.

We also have to pay for disposal of scrap metal, antifreeze, tyres, other filters, fuel, brake fluid and general waste. Our wopping council tax bill dosen't even get our bins emptyed

ca -- that's a domestic tip. If you're getting shot of the sort of quantities that a garage are, the local council will get annoyed. I presume that provision of these facilities for domestic use is covered by your council tax -- industrial use somebody has to pay for.

Carl,

You're right. If people wanted to avoid the charge, though, they could simply ask the garage to put the used oil in the tin that the new oil has just come out of, and they could then dispose of it themselves FOC at their local tip.
