Default Oil pick up pipe snapped

Thought id post this up on here.

Car- 2007 wrx sl
Oil used millers cfs changed every 3months/3000miles

This happend to me a month ago.

come back from hospital last thursday and went to GI.Motorsports to speak to gaz,
my oil warning light came on as i was about to turn the engine off, so left it an hr or so to cool down and it needed 1/2 ltr of oil but thats nothing, so started the car and still no oil pressure, so turned it off and left it overnight,

went up friday and done an oil pressure test and no pressure in the engine so car onto the ramps and removed the oil pump, which showed this, looked like the pump had gave up and the bearing had started to grind and break up,

you can see in the pics where the oil has stopped and all the small fragmetations

so engine out job,

and then wee took the sump off to find the REAL problem,
the oil pick up pipe had snapped in the sump causing all the other damage. after doing a few searches its becoming more common and effects all newages regardless of engine size!!

i noticed online that some folk had theres replaced when they were in the local dealers for oil issues, yet theres no recall for them so why would the dealers replace them with any oil issue problem free of charge??

so i contacted subaru and after a gd chat with brian at subaru ayr i sent him picks of the damaged pick up pipe and all other damaged items etc, as well as my service history etc and they will speak to subaru uk,

im not expecting anything but with the amount of things on the net if it helps someone else out then thats cool.

heres a cpl links to show it effects ALL newages !!

As of today im still waiting on word back from subaru uk.

Iv not long brought a hawkeye sti,,,after a couple of weeks of driving I fitted some gauges and found my oil pressure was quite low (1bar warm idel) so had it tested properly and the gauges was reading right so removed the pump and found out of the 5 bolts holding it all together only two were tight and the rest were hanging out and ready to catch on something,,,,,the pic is how it came out I didn't touch it ,,,very very lucky as it seems no damage was done

Quite a common thing to happen. I've had 2 fail.
Lucky I know the symptoms & know what my gauge readings should be.

Both issues are quite common on classic's and newage, most just think the bottom ends are chocolate but there is usually a culprit and it's often one of the above.

Harmonic resonation causes the pipe to crack. But due to the design I beleive that its a tube that's been bent with heat so is a little to thin.

Killer b Motorsports do a reinforced mandrel bent tube which is stronger

I'm gonna have a go at making a stainless steel version myself to match my new group n sump setup.

is it a massive job to fit one? i have a low mileage sti lump in my blob wrx (38k roughly) and i dont mind spending money on it to prevent stuff like this

To be honest. The 2.0 isn't really an issue. More a 2.5 as it runs a sump setup similar to a twin scroll.

But to change it you'd need to remove the intercooler and pitch stopper and lower engine mount nuts and jack the engine up. Remove dipstick tube and unbolt the sump.
