Default Spare wheel v AWD answer.

Hey all,

I got this email via eBay asking me the below, can you answer it on his behalf .
Pulling my hair out looking for a 17 inch steel spare to fit 2010 plate Impreza diesel ...Can you help, please? Don't fancy the foam, limp home throw tyre away option. Already have a 16 inch STI spacesaver which fits but getting contradicting stories as to whether it will wreck differential!! (Handbook says petrol version spare IS smaller diameter...) 'Official' dealers say yes/no/dont know/dont care - tale you pick. And have you ever treied to contact Subaru UK!
hopefully (Sorry - sounding like a grumpy old man)
john
I think I know the answer, however I would sooner know for sure. I replied.
To be honest I don't know about the diesel version. Re the Diff, your right it may/could damage the diff if its a long way out. The best bet would be to measure the rolling circumference against one of your regular wheels to make sure it rolls the same or as near as damn it. If you we're to run 2 wheels with a 45 profile and 2 wheels with 40, you would in short time wreck the diff, in fact I've heard stories that a guy ran 1 tyre with say 2mm and put 3 new tyres on the other rims 7mm which buggered his diff.

Maybe register on Scoobynet, you'll get the answer in no time. I'm on there as Rob Day, let me know if you want me to post on your behalf.

Regards Rob

My car came with a spacesaver as standard. The handbook says to put the DCCD in free diff/ wheel all the way back, bottom green light on dash. I suggest this bloke with the 2010 impreza diesel reads his handbook.

I've pointed him this direction for answers, in fact sent him the link to this thread.

By the sounds of it he's done his home work, but as usually there is contradicting stories/facts.

Providing the same rolling circumference is in place I see no harm.

Anyway here is the latest reply.
Hi ROb
Many thanks for oyur quick reply. What a nightnmare ...the handbook does say replace all the tyres at once!!

We ran two Justy's a few years ago and cant remember this palaver! If I find the answer I will give you first shot at supplying.

thanks again
