Default buying a car with Big End gone?

Im currently looking at planning a project involving a 2003 WRX

my idea is to get one for sale thats got the big end gone and other than that in good nick.

from there i'll get the 2.1 stroker mod done which will get over the initial big end issue but also set me up for other mods after like turbo, etc

the purpose is to achieve about 450 BHP and be able to beat cars like 911 GT3 up to 60/70 MPH

my question on here is, is it a good idea getting the car with engine issues?

If it does seem logical what should i look out for when buying one in that condition?

Also do people sell cars on here in that state often?

As a side my choice of WRX over STI is the cost - iv seen people selling blob wrx with big end failure for around £1000 where i simply aint seen STI's out there on the cheap other than crash salvage ones and thats not the type of project im after.

I will run the 5 speed box with some advice on best organic clutches to take extra horses.

brake upgrades i guess is an extra cost but i guess i would upgrade those even if i got the STI.

the ODB on the WRX should be fine for 450 so dont need the CDB adding to the cost.

guess in the ideal world the STI would be my preferred option but the WRX will cost me money over a period of time and not straight upfront ( hence the project )

but the sti has a six speed box and brembo brakes, you may build a 2.1 engine but the wrx gearbox wont take the power and it wont stop.
and mr porsche will carry on overtaking you
do you have any idea what it costs to build a 450 bhp engine starting from a wrx ??
firstly a turbo capable of 450 bhp is going to cost you at least 1k second hand.

You won't find a cheap Sti as they all get broken for spares even with a knackerd engine you can pull at least £3k out of them in bits, depending on your budget I'd have a think about it before you start anything, To have a RELIABLE 450bhp in a WRX is not going to come cheap, Your 2.1 is going to cost at least 2k in parts alone without labour, brakes, gearbox, clutch at least another 2k and that's before you start in the turbo/fuelling/exhaust etc...It all adds up.

I would do some research of costs, I run a STI @ 429 hp and i know what its cost me to sort as well as a full rebuild and it aint cheap.... Then you have all the WRX parts to upgrade.

Op I've just finished doing exactly same thing for her indoors ...

Car was bought with a dead bottom end ,and after a bit of handy work and some time it now has a nice newly refreshed engine built and fitted by myself and owes her indoors under 1000 inc cost of car too mate

She is chuffed anyway and so am I as she too busy out n about in said car to give any earache lol
I call that a win win ,although to be fair her engine had some reuse able parts so helped with cost

but is it 450bhp like the op wants, a rebuild to original wrx spec and building a 450bhp engine from a wrx engine is not the same thing

I guess the project is more like Lego for me - the building is as fun as the final result.

Cost for the car WRX is going to be about £1500 and after another £3k - £4k she should be mostly there

where as i doubt I could get a STI for £6

I do understand what people are saying though about the STI -

So what kind of mods and horse power could I look at in the STI and what sort of costs for these mods?

£3/4000 wont get you very far thats for sure fella. You'll need to double that to get the results you want.

3 to 4 k are you sure??

firstly a turbo and 6 speed box and clutch to run 450bhp is going to cost you at least £2500 quid then you need to rebuild the original engine with forged parts, new exhaust, injectors, fmic, then it will need a map.

thats before you have upgraded the brakes to stop it.

Mmmm Guess im still in dream land then at the mo - i was thinking that the 2.1 stroker kit ( £2500 ) and the turbo (£1500 ) would get most of the way - was thinking 650 injectors too,
the other bits like exhausts are add ons I wasnt going to class in with the cost as I would do that to my cars anyway.

Write your parts list out & prices
From purchase of car
I'm interested to see what corners your cutting to make it a reliable 450 build on the cheap

you will need a fmic and remap, thats before you have touched the brakes and handling.

as said earlier you will need a six speed sti box and clutch for that power too.

your budget is way off mate.

you need to double your budget at least to get 450bhp.

pointless in my opinion spending that on a wrx, buy yourself a newage sti to start with as that wont need a new gearbox and already has brembo brakes plus the standard internals will handle 450 bhp without a rebuild.

yes but will still require a new turbo, injectors, fmic and remap. probably still cost around your 3k budget.

The negativity of you lot is overwhelming!!!

Right mate you're uk wrx will be around the 220bhp mark so if you add 8 of these
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TUNING-CHI...item3a6f9e63b8
you will be at the 460bhp mark for well under £110
