hi all i have just bought a 2005 wrx wagon in light blue
it has an aftermarket exhaust and dump valve on it (very discreet)
anyway its my first scooby since my 1995 wrx which was like bullet
this one however seems very flat
i noticed it has a standard air filter set up
i presume this is why its slow
can anyone give me some advise on a recommended replacement? please
i am not wanting to spend a lot as i need it for the petrol like the old days lol

If it's 225 bhp they are a tad slow compared to a classic, sounds like you need to lose the dump valve and get it remapped, should bring it up to around the 270bhp mark, then they go a bit better,

The 2.0 WRX wagon isn't the world's fastest car anyway, that might be the first part of your problem. If you nail the clutch on one they take off very quickly but otherwise I could only describe them as rapid.

I wouldn't have thought the aftermarket dump valve is doing it any favours especially inbetween gear changes. Best go revert to OEM or if you insist on having one, something recirculating rather than VTA. Be prepared for a flaming if you do not heed this advice!

Will need a remap if it has an aftermarket exhaust, you can get running issues if not. If you go for a cold air induction kit as well (probably the best option) then it will definitely need a remap and maybe uprated fuel pump. You could probably push 265-280bhp on a standard engine with that.

Yep, standard wagon is a bit flat, which is why I bought a mapped one.

Difference is night & day imo.

its not exactly flat its just not smooth through the power curve in 3rd upwards
cant really explain, sounds like remap would sort it

Just also brought a 2005 wrx wagon with ppp 261 according to the sticker, ill eat my own shorts if it does 230 in fact the ppp map is also strange to explain.... Sometimes when leaving a corner or island lets say 15-20 mph in 2nd it seems to take ages to want to pull... I'm also hoping the ppp is just a crap generic map that ain't that brill and making the car seem laggy as hell it still got std td04 so might upgrade that a little and get a decent mapper on the case....
I always thought a td04 low revs would like to take off but this certainly doesn't but then it drives sweet if you just wanna chill around

The PPP never made the 'claimed' figures. Its an ok map but as you say, just a generic one that doesn't put much stress on the engine.
A custom map will transform it, the little 04 turbo is good for around 280. Maybe a touch more depending on the rollers you use.

When I got my first Impreza many moons ago, a MY01 Bugeye WRX. Even though I thought it was a really good piece of kit, I always thought it was a little underpowered.
Suffered turbo lag like a bitch, as I was always needing to change down a cog!
Also, in a posted 30mph zone, any incline required 3rd gear, which REALLY surprised me!

No such quirks on the later MY05 STi, and definitely not on my latest RB320 with the torque available in any gear!!!

Spot on m8 mu jdm bug was also a good tool would pull most gears but as stated needing 3rd gear circa 30mph etc
