Default Engine management lights come on

My cars a 2004 wrx sti with ecutek remap with data monitor. I was driving Friday afternoon and the engine management light came on. All readings on the data monitor were fine and the car drove normal. I took it easy and drove to a couple of garages near by to diagnose but they couldn't find the diagnostics port under the dash. Does any know if this would have been moved as part of the ecutek map? Also Simon from JGM can sort this but his on holiday for a couple of weeks and I need the car for Saturday. Can anyone recommend somewhere local to me (Grays, Essex) to take the car? I might take it to TDI at lakeside as they're closest but expensive I'm told. Any experiences with these? Any help will be greatly appreciated as I'm pulling my hair out!!!! Thanks!!

Go and see Paul at Extreme Scoobies mate. He's in Boreham, Essex and what he doesn't know about these cars probably isn't worth knowing!

Drive off boost until it's sorted; better safe than sorry!

PS No, ecutek remap doesn't move the diagnostic port; and the diagnostic functions of the car should still be fully accessible!

I drove it between garages then home at around 1500rpm. Is he familiar with ecutek?

I was thinking that Rob, but wasn't sure, as when I looked under the dash two black ports were plugged together. Does anyone know if it is safe to unplug the monitor to do a diagnostic? Sorry to sound dumb as I'm not sure with this kind of stuff!

Memory codes are read by connecting the black or sometimes clear plugs
Present codes by the green
OBD2 16 pin data link connector
Memory codes should be read first

It's more than likely if you were driving spirited
Your light came on / stayed on ?
Stopped turned engine off for few minutes / turned back on light was off
- if it was like that scenario ?
Knock
Take it easy till codes are confirmed

I don't really put my foot down if I'm honest. Had my 76year old Dad in the car too. Was on a large roundabout when I noticed it came on. I've booked it in to TDI South on Wednesday as its the closest place.

The OBD under the steering column with an PSI3 Data monitor plugged in can get in the way. You can remove the OBD port and tuck it away with some cable ties with the Monitor plugged in. Is is much neater.

I did this with my old Scoob and there is no issue with unplugging the Monitor to do a diagnostic.

Have you check the Historic Codes on the Monitor?

Hope this helps?

Manually Reading ECU Codes (Classic Impreza’s only)

On Classic shape Impreza’s only (not Newage) faults can be displayed as pulses of the Check Engine Light. If the Check Engine Light goes out there is no fault.

It's all tucked up neatly behind the dash. I've checked the data monitor for fault codes and its displaying no faults! Ill see what the diagnostic shows up. I wasn't sure if you could unplug the monitor so many thanks!!!!!

Check the data monitor for Historic codes stored on the ECU which may be lighting up the CEL.......... The ECU stores current and Historic codes.... might be no current but some historic codes.

As midlife said above, let it scan for codes and when it comes up empty or showing a code if you enter again it brings up historic codes that are not present now, the ecutek monitor is a handy bit of kit IMO, you don't need a garage to do a diagnostic fault check as that should do it for you and clear all fault codes and reset the ecu if wanted, perhaps clear everything and see what it says when the light appears again (unless the car is physically ill and you can notice it when driving then get it looked at)

Right I've checked the data monitor for current faults and its shows 0. I've checked for historic codes and it show 1, P0420 which I've read is common and to do with the exhaust system, either CAT or 1 of 2 O2 sensors. It's going into TDI to check in a minute.

P0420 is the cat system below par............. usually because parts of the cat system are missing. not usually a rear 02 sensor problem.

Car is fitted with a hi-flow sports CAT and have been reading up that's its common with this type of CAT. Anyway TDI have cleared the EML, checked everything, took the car out for a road test with data logging equipment and found that everything's ok and the car is running as it should do! :-)
What they said to me is that I should drive the car harder to clear the exhaust out as I hardly ever hit boost. So drive it properly lol!
