Default New cars, as in cars made today. Do you like them?

Sorry all, just bored lol

Basically, what im getting at is: what are your views on new model cars?

Me personally, i dont know why but i prefer to drive something a good deal older.
I have driven modern cars and find them quite boring tbh, but i guess you could say im poor and cant afford anything decent, as dont me wrong, if i had the cash there are lot of new cars i would buy. But i dont lol.

For instance, a few years back i bought us a new family car - 57 reg 1.8 petrol ford cmax. Does everything we need with 2 kids etc, but its boring as **** to drive lol but i guess thats not why we got it.
So 6 months ago when i told the missus i was getting a 'new' car, she wasnt best pleased when i rocked up home in something older than i had before with more miles on the clock lol.

Ive not driven anything sporty thats new i guess, but have driven a fair few hire cars over the last 6 years or so. Ok they are nice place to be on long journeys etc, but i couldnt ever see me parting with a reasonable amount of cash that would buy you a decent escort cosworth!

Im 32 btw if that makes any difference lol

I'm 30 and regularly drive a 61 plate A3 TDi with DSG gearbox.
Very tight and controlled handling/braking. Low road noise, very smooth but no feel, no sense of occasion.
DSG gearbox has a superb gearchange, stupid ECU has no idea though, changing when I least expect it and the worst is start/stop!

Older cars tend to tell you what's wrong, give you noises and feels. I honestly think it's just noise deadening, power steering and power assisted brakes. Takes all the fun out of it, even if it is just a TDi

My VAG point of view:

I had a 13 plate Golf 1.6 TDi 102 ps as a courtesy car a while back whilst my 54 plate Passat TDi 130 ps was in the bodyshop (warranty front wings!) and the Golf was just boring.

I've driven loads of different cars over the years and they don't make cars like they used to. They all drive the same, a Golf will be like a Fabia which will be like a Caddy Van and so on.

It comes from them all sharing parts, floorplans, engines, running gear etc. They are just a different shape that's all.

My Passat B5.5 is the last of what I call old school proper build, it's done 101k miles and was mapped by AmD in Essex 5 years ago.

Would I buy a new VW, Skoda, Audi etc.....no I wouldn't.

I had a passat dsg last year to drive to brum airport, in auto it was ok.. In tiptronic it still changed gear before the redline, and in dsg paddle mode it would still change gear on its own.
It was a pain in the *** lol so just left it in auto and didnt notice any difference! The electronic handbrake took some getting used to, and the stop start was a pain in the **** so got turned off....

I work for bosch and theynare always developing electronics for vehicles. Too much electronics these days imo

im really into old vauxhalls,my favorite being the mk3 cav gsi2000/mk2 cav sri 130 and being a previous owner of both of them i would prefer to drive them compared to say an insignia/vectra c etc

new cars seem too safe, airbags everywhere, electronic this and power assisted that,to big and bulky and alot seem to look very similar

I used to work for fast ford mag so was always out in hire cars etc, one week while p bruntingthorpe i had a focus diesel... Done a few laps of the short track and there is a chicane, i could take that at 70odd in the focus. A week later i was back there in a vectra sri... F*cking thing nearly killed us lol. Took the same chicane at the same speed and it massively understeered, bounced over the kerb on 2 wheels and i thought we were gonna roll!

The newer astras are not great either. Not driven an insignia but a mate has and didnt like it. I have drove a friends zifira and that was not good.
Back in the day my brother had a mk3 cav sri, 150bhp job. That went pretty well tbh and i didnt mind driving that, or my other brothers rev 5 mr2.

I was given a mk2 astra sri once, intended on turning it into a trackday car, but the std suspension and brakes were very poor so i done the right thing and scrapped it lol

I dont like vauxhalls tbh, except the monaro but thats a holden lol

thing is tho all the old vauxhalls needed was a simple brake/suspension upgrade and they were very capable cars,my mate used to run a mk2 astra gte 16v with around 180bhp and it was a very fast car with a kerb weight of around 900kg.vauxhalls cross-compatabilty with the older cars was good too.

For getting from a to b? the more modern car the better.

For getting from a to b, with a little fun mixed in? Old school all the way.

I do like the mk cav sri redtop. I guess they can be made to handle and stop, but out the box are not great imo.

My last big power car was a mk1 sierra zetec turbo. 400bhp and rwd. That c*nt tried to kill me everytime i stepped on the throttle.

I miss that tbh lol

I dont think thats entirely true. A shonky 15 year old impreza will push most thing down the twistys.

Hell, when i got hit off my motorbike in 2006 i was given a 1.0l nissan micra hire car. After i could move my neck i remember pushing a porsche boxter along the b roads around bath. He didnt like it much and yes, would leave me if it straightened up but as soon as there was a corner i was on his ***!

Not that im a driving god or anything, far from it. But whats the fastest car in the world? A hire car lol

I love my early and mid nineties cars With new cars you can feel how fragile they are
and almost have no character.

You misunderstood me.

What I meant was - for simply getting about, modern cars are far better in terms of comfort, luxury and economy etc. but if you want a bit of fun doing it, then I think older cars are better at providing that.

i used to love old pugs aswell (205 gti,309 gti and the 405 mi16 4x4) but in my opinion peugeot havent made anything like that ever again

a well sorted 205 with the 16v mi lump was worry for many higher powered cars in the twisties

never really like old fords, smokey old cvh engines were no good really and the s2 rs turbo couldnt touch the astra gte 16v (132bhp was poor from a turbo lump)

never been a vw fan, always see them covered in silly stickers and so low they are bouncing all over the place

anybody remember the old renault 21 turbo?

I agree, no character and seemingly more "disposable" after 3 / 4 years.

Bring back the Nova GTE. Absolute go-kart mine was, talk about throttle response. Not hugely powerful, but extremely nippy.

The Bosch Jetronic EFi system was very good indeed, mine was a 1990 on an H.

+1

cars didnt need massive power back then to be fun, these days the cars weigh so much they need massive power to get them moving

i think aswell that people dont really buy cars to suit there driving routine properly,i work at a quarry and 95% of my driving is spent on country roads so the scooby is perfect for that,i love monaros and m3's but i dont think i would love driving them in the small country roads and if i came up against a scoob i would have my **** handed to me.same goes for people that go up and down the motorway who complain about the scooby not being comfy.........................no ****ing ****

Dad had a 405 mi16, never drove that tho as i was about 10 when he had it. I did own a 205 gti and a 309 sri, but both 1.6. They were great cars! Although the 309 was a goldy beige colour pmsl.

My mate had a 300+ s2 rst and that was fast, ive never owned a cosworth or an rs tho, which is ironic lol

My dad owned a red 3 door 309 gti from new in '87 to 2003. I think it went to the scrapyard in the sky not long after he sold it

Only ever got to drive it once, when I was about 18 and it felt pretty rapid back then.

I'm sure it's the car that turned me into a petrol head and I still remember the day he took it home. Happy memories

Ah venoms! I was a TSW Hockenheim man myself!

I never knew till i was about 20 that my old man used to rally a mk1 ford anglia in the 70's. he made a 2.2l granada engine fit and said back then nothing would get near it.

He crashed it a lot so i guess i got that from him too lol

Shrek, where is hinkley?

I used to have to stay in a b&b in shoreham on sea, west sussex. There was a pub on the brighton road that had a red 309gti and a mk2 mr2 in the carpark. They never moved for like 2 years and one day i was going to stop and enquire about the 309.... It had gone!
Typical
