2002 jdm bugeye sti advice
morning gents, ive got a chance of a jdm 2002 bug sti. just wondering what sort of power these can take and wether they do indeed have any forged internals or pistons as ive read conflicting posts on the subject? what sort of power can they run safely and what turbo/mods would be needed to run 360 bhp or so? ive read they can run 400bhp but im not going that far lol. they seem to be regarded as a good base for further mods? its been mapped at some point as the owner has paperwork stating 300 bhp. would i be right in thinking that would be on ecutek? also would i need to pay a licence fee on top of mapping costs if i want to remap later on? ive done a search on here but didnt get all the answers im looking for so anyone with experience of the jdm bug please enlighten me with your knowledge!

Hi there
JDM STI are far superior to the UK STI,better heads and better engine for start, brakes are usually OE 4pots if its 16" version, suspension is still OK and with little tweaks car will be great on day to day driving
I would say safe bhp on this engine can be somewhere in region 400-450bhp,above that is possible but on how long etc, people run them at higher bhp without the issue
With simple remap and decat exhaust you should be able to make 330-350bhp,JDM STI usually have been equipped VF30
Its great car for base mods and I would take this car
New age can be mapped like via EcuTek or Open source, both will give you same or similar results, just Open Source is cheaper than EcuTek

You're probably referring a spec c type ra version , as normal jdm V7 sti's came with brembos.... unless you meant them as 4 pot Brembo calipers Wagon V7 sti's came with 4 pot subaru stamped calipers..

thanks for replys guys. jura thanks as always you are most helpful with your advice. the car does have brembos, 6 speed etc all the usual sti stuff. does the jdm indeed have forged pistons or engine bits? i take it it has some to be able to take 400-450 bhp? also injectors will be 550,s im guessing? so if it is indeed running roughly 300 bhp what mods do i need to get to say 360? what sort of max power can the vf30 give? im guessing im looking at another turbo and maybe injectors as well? can the injectors be uncapped? ive heard the term but not really sure whats involved? ive heard of reflowing on the old side feed yellows etc but not sure on newer cars. thanks for any further input guys

Hi there
Not sure about the engine if does have forged bits, but JDM engines are better than UK counterparts
JDM STI should have 550 Pink injectors, this turbo VF30 should make 330-350bhp
Above that yes you will need bigger turbo, you have few choices in turbo department, injectors should be OK for 400bhp with upped Fuel pressure, but for safe 400-450bhp I would say 650cc/740cc injectors
I would rather invest to better injectors like PE(Power Enterprise) or others, reflowing the injectors is again personal choice,JDM STI or any New age using Top feed injectors

cheers jura, ive read posts on here saying the jdm has forged pistons. im guessing there is plenty of turbo choices? td05 18g? or sc36 or 38? would like quick spool when i do start to upgrade. will be the way it is for a while until the funds recover lol. thanks again for your input

got an update on this car guys. went to see it and got some pics. i dont think its a jdm car after all as theres no rear wiper on the car and the fuse box cover is in english. these were the things id read to look out for as tell tale signs that its a jdm. got a look at the paperwork as well. it was bought from litchfield imports so maybe the current owner assumed it was jdm because it came from litchfield origionally? is this a uk car then i presume? what is the difference between this car and a type uk? its got paperwork for an ecutek remap to 300bhp as well as some whiteline suspension goodies.
also mot has an advisory for play in steering rack inner joint (s) would that be an expensive item to repair? anyway heres the pics maybe someone can tell from the pics what it is.

another check is jdm sti have ic water spray bottle in engine bay and uk has it in the boot on drivers side.
also the indicators are on the left stalk on jdm, right stalk on uk car.
check for folding mirrors too as they are on jdm cars and not uk.
the spoiler is a cheap copy and id say 99% its a uk car.

thanks jay, is that a hard rule in telling the difference? whats the difference between a type uk sti and this ? the vin starts with jf1gdb. after some digging in places it says jf1 is japan or do they all say that as they are made there ie uk cars vin states the same? seller says his insurance company classed it as import?

Hi there
From pictures looking like is it UK STI,but without the removing turbo, you will don'y now for sure if its UK or JDM
As above JDM STI has have VF30 turbo and UK STI has been equipped by VF35
Agreed JDM STI has have wilder cams and heads are usually Big port heads, which are regarded as best heads
For 380-400bhp i would go with 20G,HRC 300LPH fuel pump, yours stock injectors should be OK with higher fuel pressure at 400bhp,if not 650cc injectors and aftermarket FPR I would add too,TMIC should be OK,but as above I would go with FMIC and possibly with headers too

thanks as always for your input jura. how would the 20g spool? i hate lag lol. would a 18g spool up any quicker? the numbers arent quite so important just that im coming from a lighter classic and they say in a newer car you need to run 350 or so to get the same sort of feel? i have a set of api ported headers in the shed which i never got round to fitting for the wagon (my96) would they fit a my02 bug? they would help with spool. i was at ra motorsport to get my wagon mapped from andy f and one of the sidc guys bought a vf35 for his gb270 and had it fitted and it made 360 bhp! of course the gb270 is a 2.5 but the turbo went well. thanks for your input.
