Default Front subframe :(

Ok so not had the car long at all, just taken it to get new tyre on front drivers side and noticed the u shape subframe is completely rotten, I mean se through rotten, been advised not to drive the car (for obvious reasons) does anyone know the part number for the front subframe so I can try and find a used one as I spent most of my hard earned cash buying the car I've looked on ebay and can't seem to find one for my 2001 bugeye wrx. Thanks in advance for any help

I got a spare one from a 1999 UK 2000 facelift, you'll have to check if fits?

If its the u frame from one side,around behind the front bumper and to the oppisite side? Then theres not a problem with using the car. Many including myself have removed this frame. the cars not going to fall to bits. The frame is there for eu crash ratings many of the jap spec cars dont have it from factory. Ive been running without mine for at least two years.

Bloody hell, I never knew that, thanks turbotits ill double check it's the right frame tomorrow, the bloke at the garage told me it's a mot failure and not to drive it. Thanks again

Yep thats the one. The guy at the garage is correct in that it would fail an mot. It would fail for excess corrosion within a persribed area. If its not there then it doesnt matter at all. If you do remove it then the plastic undertray goes too

A persribed area being 30cm of an steering,suspension,structual part of the car. theres loads more persribed areas. But you get the idea

As turbo says, it's fine to run without as I have been for about 4-years. The other use it has is to mount the engine undertray. If it's corroded it will fail, if it's not fitted it can't be corroded

Lol yeah I've read up about it it saves about 14kgs on weight, supposed to improve handling and have read a few articles about the safety issue, apparently it doesn't make much difference at all but don't hold me to it, that's just what I've read,

Just to warn you, don't forget to check first with your insurance that removing it (a safety feature) won't invalidate your policy.

It wasn't on it when I bought it. Simples. You do worry osimabu

On another note your pro dynax and anti waxoyl rants have made me see the light.I now use dynax instead, and agree that waxoyl aint the best( especially black)

Sorry, yes, I do bother about anything insurance related as my family are currently having first hand experience of just how hard they'll try to get out of paying if you don't stick exactly to their rules.

I'm glad you like the Dynax. Only those who've not yet tried it will attempt to say that Waxoyl is a worthwhile alternative. I've yet to find anything made by Bilt Hamber that is not better than any competitor's product.

Is it grief to take off, are the things bolted to it ie engine subframe?or is it just take off the undertray and unborn the u frame job done?

Undertray off and just unbolt it - if you have some ramps you don't even need to take the wheels off

I'm tempted to do this "mod" appart rom the weight saving does it affect the handling and if so how?

Both front wheels feel like they are a Giraffe on ice, independent to the whole car . . .

So you just lose some unsprung weight?

I seem to remember a thread where it was discussed at length but not sure what the outcome was, i'm also sure that there was some talk of it improving handling.

I'll see if I can find it.

Its not unsprung weight tho is it.

its bolted to the underside of the front the car.

unsprung weight is things that are not suspended by the suspension, like the suspension, hubs, brakes, wheels and tyres etc.

everything else that is attached to the body of the car is sprung weight
