The cheap ones are cheap for a reason, they don't lift very high, not all that steady and won't last very long.
Ive got a large 2 tonne trolly that was my father's. Its probably 20 years old and still works. A decent jack will be circa £150.

My £20 Halford one picks up the car fine and for £10 more I picked up a set of 2 ton axle stands that I use if I'm going to be getting under the car and yanking at anything. If I ran a garage it may be different but for an occasional user they work fine.

You won't get much of a jack for £20 I can assure you, and certainly not one id be happy to trust while laying under a car.

I always use stands, I was lazy once and put the stands under the sills - but left the car actually supported by a £50 Clarke jack from MachineMart.
Sure enough, the jack pinged closed and the car slammed down 1/2inch onto the sills - so no harm done, but properly **** my pants.

And anything else I can find
My point was that the cheap jacks really aint that good. I recently did some work for a chap who had a halfords kit. The jack didn't raise the car up anywhere near a decent height making it difficult to work on. And the stands didn't exactly fill me with confidence with the little pin that takes all the weight.
No doubt they do just fine for little odd jobs like taking wheels off but if you are often under a car id suggest investing in a jack and stands that are not only better than you need but will last a couple of decades instead of a couple of years.

I can recommend this jack from Costco, low profile for lifting lowered vehicles and good lifting capacity, can't remember how much I paid but it was good value compared to the likes of machine mart etc
The axle stands they sell are good aswell think they're under £20 and they are self adjusting so you just lift the stand to the height you need and the ratchet locks it in place
