had both, type r was definitely a lot more of a raw driving experience but was hard to live with as a daily driver which is why i switched to the blob sti i have got now.
depends what you want, i can still have as much fun in the newage as i did in the type r if i try hard enough

Echo the sentiments above and add, you'll be doing silly speeds in the new age to get anywhere near the feeling you get in the type r.
One other thing to bear in mind is if you do opt for the type r then make sure you get a very good condition well sorted one, ie; one that someone else has spent a **** load of cash on, because a half decent one like mine is enough of a money pit, I can't bear thinking about what a knackered rusty one will need spending on it.

type r all day mate
iv had a few newage sti's ( 53 reg, wr1 and a widetrack ) and a fair few classics
( wrx, sti's, type r's and a p1)
now I'm back in a type r again
says it all really ;-)
as for the newage been more refined that's bollox as my type r is very very good if I want to use it every day
the newage ones need at least 380/400 bhp to make it a bit if fun
and even then it feels Lardy
;-)

if its just a toy type r mate, so much fun to drive.
dunno why there is all the newage hating though, my sti is only running about 340 atm but it still puts a smile on my face every time give it a blast (in the lower gears anyway) coilovers help it feel a bit more like a sporty car that wants to be chucked about

Ive had both, the Type R was simply awesome, but I couldnt live with the two doors and dire fuel consumption on a day to day basis, (plus i was sold a questionable one by an unscrupulous seller who used to be on here) so I traded it for a JDM Blob. I love the refinement of the blob, but its no way the go cart that the Type R was...but its still epic.
If i was loaded, I would definitely have a Type R for play days, as well as the blob

As above, type r feels more like a go cart and on short blasts it is more fun tp throw about, it feels smaller and more chuckable if that makes sense however the general costs are more and theres more of a chance of something going wrong.
Newage is more comfortable to drive and a lot less likely to break but feels bigger on the road, your best bet is to test drive a couple of each and see what you think tbh mate. Its all about personal preference really

You can always sell it a couple of months down the line if you miss you newage

I'd play it safe and go for 330bhp, engine and box will handle that all day long and no need for expensive upgrades, once you get in to 350 territory you need to start thinking about clutches, turbo, remap. gearbox, injectors, intercooler, brakes, suspension, handling, bigger wheels all of which cost big bucks and will make less reliable and bugger all difference from one running 330 ish on the road.
They are fantastic straight out the box and lots more fun with the wayward handling and slightly ropey brakes.
I went for the V3 as it has no abs and wilder cams, Mr subaru said it was the best one too, so I figured that would do for me, I modded mine a bit due to a blown engine, but having been round the houses with it I find it was the most fun bog standard running around 320bhp, with some decent pads and discs a few polly bushes and a decent geo set up and it's tail happy days.
