Default Oil filter - Blue/Black - Any difference?

As above. I heard the black filter is no longer available. Is there any internal difference or have Subaru changed supplier?

I'm just putting a list of service items together for when I service my WRX next weekend.

Oh, and Subaru won't post the filter out to me. I have to go and collect even though it is a 60 mile round trip! Popped in there last weekend to collect some bumper clips that I had ordered a month ago. Because they were performing their annual stock take, they could supply me with any parts! Not impressed!

As for oil, this looks like a good deal at the moment:

Apparently one of the colours had a big faulty batch so I'd find out which one!

it was the BLUE that had a recall and that was a number of months back and no issue at all on-going.............

they are reasonable quality and have been used/supplied for years by most of the larger Subaru specialists incl. the likes of RCM and ourselves (made in the States)

the BLACK one is better quality IMO and generally we spec for higher power / competition cars / etc. (Japanes made)

Thanks for that guys. I always used to use the black filters on my old classics, but then that was probably all that was available at the time.

I will be getting a couple of black ones as it is only the best for my scoob.

K&N filters are my choice. Socket head on the bottom to get them off easily.

I always seem to get the blue one from Opie. No issues, tiny it is. I fill it with fresh oil, tap it so the bubbles rise, and spin it on.

This will shed the light on the blue oil filters, it's well documented on the net.

Thanks for the update. Seems like quite a few blue filters are now affected. Have bought a black one for now.

I always use the genuine Mazda RX8 oil filters, made by same co as the old black Subaru ones with same bypass pressure. Slightly larger capacity.

Part no. N3R1-14-302

I always used the black subaru oil filter and when they stopped making them and started putting out the blue one,I started to use the pink sti filter which was expensive but the feedback that the blue oil filters made by (FRAM) was getting I did not want to take a chance so I did not mind paying the extra for the pink sti ones, but now I just use the original black ones now there back.SJ.
