Default Epic Clutch Fail!

Well as some of you may know I have been looking for a clutch for my car, https://www.scoobynet.com/wanted-18/...it-wanted.html

To which I found a twin plate OS Giken 2nd hand at £700. I did a little research of my own, inc https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...in-plates.html

I negotiated and bought it with the understanding that it had covered around 1000 miles and was in perfect condition. Very pleased at this considering they are £1900 new, I bought it, and the Subaru specialist (Cams Performance (Brian)) and mapper (Team Carr (Andrew)) was worked around the assumption the clutch could be fit and installed along with other mods two weekends ago and mapped Monday after. The clutch landed in due time, and it turned out to be utterly fubard!

Very miffed I started a PayPal dispute (good job I didn't gift the payment like the seller wanted) some details here: https://www.scoobynet.com/projects-4...e-project.html

Anyway now desperate as I needed another clutch, and quick as I was taking valuable space at the garage, and as an ACT looked up to the job although at £700 (I was quite pi$$ed at allowing myself to be ripped off! and now forced to buy new) I landed lucky with another twin, or at least I though!

I sourced a twin plate on here at a very good price. So this was arranged to be delivered last Friday, and subsequent work to start on the weekend, and mapped the same weekend. Clutch landed as promised last Friday, no flywheel ;( jeeeez. Work again held off, seller contacted and flywheel to land on Monday, mapping held off.

Tuesday no flywheel, and today the Bolts arrive, with no flywheel LOL. By this point I already instructed to fit a donor flywheel, which isn't ideal as it's trying to engage all the time, so 1st gear and reverse are a bind, anyway this was my call and I'm pleased it actually back on the road!

So big Thanks the Brian @ Cams and Andrew Carr for their patience, and getting the car back on the road. Unfortunately when the Matching flywheel lands I'll need to go back and get it all swapped over BUT at least I know it drives really well, and it will be in good hands with Brian

The Moral of the story:
DO NOT buy from Gumtree
ALWAYS ensure the seller knows what "is" a complete kit
DO use Brian at Cams Performance in Lower Darwen for experience, good honest work, and patience
DO use Andrew Carr at TeamCarr for mapping, his work is very good indeed

The result of the mapping:

The pi$$ take "Mint" OS GIKEN

Hope you enjoyed my rant, but better still, it's not over until I get that Flywheel I've nobody to name and shame, I'm sure the seller will get it right in the end! As for the OSGIKEN joker

Rob

gpssti4 is the only one who makes perfect sense.

I've been around long enough to know that if you buy "cheap built" products, not "cheap purchases price" products it will likely be a disaster. This was not the case of these purchases. I was very unlucky on the first purchase, fortunately I used PayPal and I have been protected with the purchase . The second purchase was all the sellers fault, and if I wasn't in such a rush for all the kit to arrive it would have been spot on. The seller of the 2nd kit seems like a decent bloke, but appears to be having several blonde moments

Why buy a second hand clutch in the first place - especially given the labour charges to fit the thing

Budget, and in most cases this has worked out for the better. And it still will even with my issues.

The Exedy Twin, plus fitting would be around £1800? I'll be around half that cost, with a very low mileage kit, I'll be happy once the flywheel arrives

Probably wouldn't even do that, its on the metal on the outer edge

I did consider Araldite'ing a couple of brake pads on the friction plate

Yes I am pleased with it, the driveability and power delivery is very good, very satisfied with the result, not quite as much power as I had hoped, but to be honest chasing numbers isn't necessary now, it feels as quick as my last 2.1 S206B classic

Definitely, not bothering with this site again! The seller asked for "gift" I paid "goods" on sent him £25 extra to cover the fees, bloody good job!

Spot on. To be fair I have always bought 2nd hand, and usually from this site, inc Engines, Turbos, Intercoolers etc etc.

I have very rarely had an issue buying or selling, and to be honest I'm only posting this thread up to show that, "yes I have been conned" however I paid with paypal protection, and Ive got my money coming back.

The 2nd clutch I bought, if I wasn't in such a rush for it was a very good buy, around 1/3 the price new, and plenty life remaining on it. However I have been let down with this purely as I didn't get everything, and now I'm waiting on the flywheel arriving. So when it arrives im sure I'll be satisfied.

Don't forget it's running 20% methanol

Unless you have plans for a fair bit more power, why have you gone for a multi-plate clutch - with all the possible drawbacks?
Mine runs around 440/400 on Vpower only and the standard clutch showed just a slight tendency to slip on the rollers. I had the clutch changed to a ACT organic (single plate, 500lbft rating) just in case. The total, including skimmed flywheel, labour etc. came to just on a grand from ExtemeScoobies here in Essex.
For £700 for the 2nd hand unit plus fitting, you could have had a brand new one perfectly capable of your power level!

It's a good question. I looked at ACT and yes for a £1000 all in I was also considering it. However I was and i still am looking at track days with more power going forward. I haven't yet spoken to Andrew Carr about more power, but I am hoping to get more from the car, as such I wanted to safe guard for the future and be able to Launch effectively.
