This will just end up being another WRX v STI debate then
If you have the budget get the STI if your going to be scraping the bottom of barrel at your budget to get a STI then either get a well sorted WRX or get a Bugeye STI.

I started looking at wrx's, then wrx 300's. Done some research and had a think, then looked at sti's. Ended up with a wr1. Set yourself a budget, decide what you really want, then find the best car you can for that money. Everybody else's opinion doesn't really matter to you. I decided that I would have sti envy, so skipped the wrx.

A good car in isolation but probably a little unfairly maligned by some. The colour scheme is marmite for sure. It's a little bit of a shame the WR1 wasn't based on the widetrack car that came out a few months later.
How are you finding it? Get some pics up in members if you haven't already!

Wooooooooo hoooooooooooo a voice of reason.
These threads always go the same way, wrx or sti? in reality they are the same as the classic or New age threads, it's all about getting the right tool for the job.
Quick daily = New age WRX
Modder = New age STI
Driver = Classic STI Type r/ ra

thans for all the comments guys, i wast intending on an sti vs wrx thread lol, my budget will be tops 5k and the car has to be a blob so i think id rather a sorted wrx than a high miler sti for that price, also im comming from a 120bhp diesel so a wrx should feel pretty rapid to me

I owned a bugeye wrx for about 8 years, and loved every minute of it. The car had stock power, and felt plenty quick - and still is compared to most other vehicles you'd have the opportunity to drive. Then about 18 months ago I moved on to a Litchfield Type 25 blobeye (which is a tuned version of a Jap import STI)
I'm glad I had the wrx before I got the STi - it meant I had a step up in performance from one car to the next. If I'd have gone straight for the STI then what do you "upgrade" to after that?

Regarding the golden age of Subarus 2001-2005 and ignoring the Cavalier lookalikes, I have a lot of STI envy tbh, especially the styling but I'm not sure if a 6 speed would be great for me and my inability to find gears.
That said, I've fitted most STI styling parts for peanuts and bought a £70 TD05 16g that took power to 320 and the fact the car weighs around 1240kg (34mpg around town!) means I've got the equivalent of circa 350 means I'm only really jealous of the Brembos at this point in time.
I'm not fully sure what my benefits are of owning a WRX over STI are, Tax and insurance etc etc.

Some people on here just like to wave their ******* around. 'my car is considerably faster than yows!'
The WRX is not a slow car. Only an idiot would suggest this. I've had a classic UK Turbo and 2 classic STI's. Im now in an 05 WRX. All had stage one mods, some with a remap and some without. They were/are all fast cars. Plus a lot of people forget how quickly the small TD04 turbo spools up.
The most important factor to consider is what 'you' want. I personally, like you, wanted a mint Impreza and I had £5k to spend. I enjoy cleaning my cars as much as I do driving them, so a scruffy bug sti just wouldn't have appealed to me. Some owners on here clearly don't give a monkey about aesthetics.
