5 or 6 speed box

Change box and diff oils for fresh and decent stuff, it may help.

Could be a synchro, or the start of a 5 speed box deciding to throw its toys out of the pram.

It's normal Combo trust me! Both mine and my mates old one often refuse just 3rd when changing around 6,000rpm. A few Tuners have also told me it's common.

Try Castrol Universal 75w90 Transmission Fluid (used to be Castrol Syntrax).

Really made a difference to my 5 speed. My Sti 4 used to have a notch going from 3rd to 4th above 4000rpm. Above oil cured it. Some say this oil just masks an existing problem, but if it allows the gears to mesh as they should, without crunching, it should prevent any further damage from occurring.

No guarantee that this will fix your neighbours issue, but it's worth a try at around £50 to do both the gearbox and the diff.

Hope this helps.
