Not going to say which one is better, as im sure there will be owners with either car thats going to say that the one they have is better!!!
But personally I prefer the Type R, I prefer the DCCD on the type r, and the shorter gear ratio's and the way the type r feels to drive!! Oh and I like the roof flap on the type r v-limited!!!

I am bias but I prefer the type r.
Has dccd, nice blue seats and roof vent plus, if your the first owner you get it mapped for the right fuel (which you assume it has had in the land of the rising sun).
P1 looks nicer as standard but is likely to have been run for years on 'poor' fuel. Plus longer in uk means more likely to rust (again if you get a fresh import you can seal and protect).
P1 has the cult name and fetches a premium and will likely hold value well, but you get more for your money with the type r.
Alcon brake upgrade option was however a plus if you find one.

For me, a P1 was the better option. Depends what you want it for, track or roads. The P1 is better set up for uk roads. Cheaper insurance and its nice to own a limited car too.

P1 for looks ... Type R for the drive. I was looking at both when i was looking to buy an impreza and i ended up with a fresh import v6 sti type r and its an amazing car.

Type R every time, only place a P1 wins is 5th gear on the motorway, but I think the later type r's had a longer 5th as well.
But mine is a V3 so I would say that, I think it depends how hard you drive, tbh I don't think there is bugger all in it, I'm sure you'll enjoy either.
I'd go on condition.

P1 suspension is better tuned for UK B roads - more compliant- but type R has more fun bits especially DCCD, big rear axle and brakes.
As for the better dash?! Type r has climate control versus a/ c on P1 - can't say that I give a monkeys about that difference on that.
I faced up to this conundrum and solved it by fitting my P1 with a 6 speed DCCD, R180 plated rear diff and rear brembos, plus Alcon two pieces, exe- tc coil overs oh and a lot more power best of both worlds as far as I am concerned

and like you say if you don't think the p1 is the best car you get banned
to$$ers
as for adding type r parts on to a p1
that tells me the r is the better car out the box
any way **** it , I'm more than happy with my r
and if I would of been this happy with my p1 I still would of had it
same goes for the wr1 I had (well I did keep it 3 years , only because I payed 19k for it ) 😳
